Jane was the daughter of George Baxter and Susan Stuart.
In 1872 Jane and her sister Bessie emigrated to America. Jane's sister Margaret also emigrated from Ireland.
On 5 November 2 1882, 2 Baptisms took place in the Old Swedes Church in Delaware, that of Matthew Wales McHugh 1 month old and Margaret Baxter aged about 11 weeks.
Two Baxter sisters attended. Jane Baxter was the Baptism Sponsor for John McHugh & Jane Hill's son, Matthew Wales McHugh. Jane was the sister-in-law of her brother Matthew's wife Sarah McHugh. Margaret Baxter was Baptism Sponsor of her brother Matthew's daughter Margaret. [1]
Jane's brothers William, Matthew and James had arrived in the 1850's and were all resident in Wilmington. William and Matthew were operating a Wholesale Liquor Store. Jane lodged with William for a time and was his Housekeeper.
Jane's brother James passed away in 1878 in Wilmington and she was named as a recipient of his Will along with her sisters Elizabeth and Margaret.
Jane and Elizabeth (Bessie) lived at 821 North Jackson Street in Wilmington and were resident there in 1920. The house was owned by their brother William and in his Will he gave them use of the house for their lifetimes and enough funds to make them financially independent.
Jane never married. She died in 1927 aged 86 at New Castle. Informant of her death was her sister Elizabeth (Bessie) Baxter of 821 Jackson Street, Wilmington.
Jane Baxter was buried at Wilmington and Brandywine Cemetery with her brother William Baxter.
Jane didn't apply to be naturalised as an American citizen.
