Biography

Margaretta was born in 1816 in Deckertown, Sussex, New Jersey ^[1][2] Her father is unknown, but documented as 'a Baxter' by her grand-daughter Effie Louisa Smith. Her mother Polly (probably Miers) moved in with John Smith b. 1771 (widower) when Margaretta was about 2. She grew up as Margaretta Smith with step-father John Smith b. 1771 but was not adopted. Her first marriage was to William H. Smith (not related to step-father John). Her second marriage was to John Ripson was a few years after her Hiram died in a construction accident.

Hiram married Margaretta Baxter on 21 Jun 1832 ^[2] Hiram and Margaretta had the following children ^[2]

2. Louise Adeline, (or Louisa Annis) b. June 9,1835, Newfane, NY. d. Mar. 20,1889, age 54. m. Jim Phillips.
3. Maria Melissa, b. Dec. 23,1837, Royalton, NY. d. Apr.17,1930, age 93 yrs. m. Seth Goodwin.
4. Lovisa Matilda, b. Sep. 24,1839, Garfield, NY. d. Nov. 8,1890, age 51 yrs. m. Louis Blackwell
5. Hiram Horace Jr., b. Dec. 21,1841, Oakfield NY. d. Mar.17,1926, age 85 yrs. m. Emmy Cruden. He was a Civil War soldier. He enlisted with his brother Wm. H., and they served together.
6. William Harrison, b. Jun 13,1844, Oakfield, NY. d. Aug. 9,1899, age 55 yrs. m. Mar. 28,1864 to Azuba Lovina Swick. He was a Civil War soldier.
7. Charles Seymore, b. May 8,1846, Oakfield, NY. d. July 29,1877, age 31 yrs. m. Mattie Gray
8. Chester Brown, b. Feb. 22,1849, Wilson, NY. d. Oct. 27,1915, at Richfield Twp. Mich. age 76 yrs. m. 1. Wealthy Purse, 2. Mary Wolverton, b. Jan. 22,1858, d. Apr. 10,1944, at Richfield, MI.

She died 15 Oct 1899 as Margaretta Ripson ^[1] noting parents John Smith and Polly Myers ^[3]
