Biography

John was born about 1830. He is the son of John Baxter.

He is one of 5 sons.

John worked as a Ploughman in Donegal.

In 1859 John married Rebecca Wallace in the Parish Meeting House of Gleneely, Inishowen. Witnesses were John McIntire, Constable and Isaac Elkin.

Rebecca was the daughter of Moses Wallace, Farmer of Gleneely.

John's brother George left Ireland and emigrated to New Zealand in 1862.

In 1871, John was the informant of his father's death.

John left Ireland in 1873 with his wife Rebecca and six children to emigrate to New Zealand..

The Baxter family arrived in New Zealand on the Mary Shepherd having left Ireland in May and arriving at the Port of Lyttleton on 20 August. John and Rebecca had six children with them on the voyage aged between 12 years and 18 months.

They settled in Temuka for the first 5 years and then to Dorie in the Ashburton area of Canterbury. The family lived on a property they named Sandy Hollow. John and Rebecca had 9 known children in their marriage, Rebecca 12, Robert 10, William James 8, Mary A 5, Eliza 3 and John aged 18 months were all born in Ireland. Three more children were born in their new home, Elizabeth who survived for just 2 days in 1874, Alexander Wallace 1879 and George 1875.

John Baxter died aged 76 and is buried at Rakaia Cemetery, Ashburton District, Canterbury.
