Tragic Accident
THOMAS BAYBUTT Buried in Natal
Funeral was held here under Masonic Auspices ~ Deceased well known here
"Under Masonic Auspices, C. B. Anderson, worshipful master of Elk River Lodge No 35 and the Rev H. U. Oswald, chaplain, officiating, with 40 brothers in attendance, the funeral of Thomas Baybtt, victim of a motoring accident at Crowsnest Thursday, was held at Natal on Sunday afternoon.
The circumstances surrounding Mr Baybutt's death were most distressing, his wife and child being with him when steering his car to the side of the road to avoid a rolling boulder, the car plunged over an embankment to the railway track below.
Eye witnesses of the tragedy testified that the car rolled over 3 times in its descent. It is stated that Mr Baybutt managed to throw his little son clear of the car before it crashed on the rails. Mrs. Baybutt sustained several injuries as did her 5 yr old son, Mr Baybutt dying instantly of a broken neck and a fractured skull as his head came in contact with the steel.
A special in charge of Garvin Moore of this city, was at once ordered out to convey the injured lady and her little boy to the Natal hospital where their injuries were given surgical attention.
Mr Baybutt was well known to many railroad men of Cranbrook, he having kept the Canadian Pacific Railway boarding house at Crowsnest for several years. Prior to his going into that business, he worked in the mines in Fernie and Michel." [4]
