Jeptha Bayles was born in Suffolk, England.

Jeptha Bayles was born on 15 March 1844 in Suffolk, England. His parents were Benjamin Bayles (1796 - 1887) and Amy (Cook) Bayles (~1800 - 1877).[1][2]

In the 1851 census Jeptha (age 7) was the son of Benjm Bayles in Wilby, Suffolk, England.[3]

On the 12th of November 1851, Jeptha arrived in New York on the "Sir Robert Peel." He had left Liverpool with his parents and siblings.[4]

Jeptha married Mrs. Eliza (Andrews) Burk on 8 April 1878.[5]

In the 1880 census Jeptha (age 37), Farmer, was the married head of household in Waterville, Marshall, Kansas, United States.[6]

His marriage was short, and in 1880, his wife left him. He published in the paper:

On or about the first week of Jan.
1880, Eliza M. Bayles left me: and
I will pay no debts of her contracting
- Jeptha Bayles[7]

In 1880, Jeptha was found in a land assessment record.[8]

He filed for divorce on 23 July 1885. Eliza refused to reply or to appear, and the divorce was finalized on 14 September 1885. She never appeared to tell her side of the story.[9][10] In 1887, Jeptha's father died. He was listed in his will.[11]

In the 1900 census Jeptha (age 56), Farmer, was the widowed head of household in Grant, Riley, Kansas.[12]

In the 1910 census Jeptha (age 66), Laborer, was the divorced head of household in Green, Pottawatomie, Kansas, United States.[13]

In the 1920 census Jepthan (age 76), Farmer, was recorded as divorced in Louisville, Pottawatomie, Kansas. He was living on the "Poor Farm."[14]

Jeptha died on 30 May 1920 in Garrison, Kansas aged 76.[15]

Research Notes

  • There is a grave for a Jeptha Bayles with only one date recorded on it, 18 March 1894. The date on the marker is situated to the far left side which seems to indicate a birth date. Could this be a child of Jeptha Bayles (1844-1920)? I can't seem to find another Jeptha Bayles in birth, census or death records. On find a grave, this person is listed with Benjamin and Amy Bayles as parents, but their son Jeptha died in 1920, not 1894. And their son was born in 1844 not 1894. Who is this?[29]
  • Jeptha seems to be missing from census records of 1860 and 1870.
    • No military records have been found
    • There is a very strange census in 1860, where Benjamin, Jeptha's father is listed with 3 unknowns. It is assumed to be Benjamin since it is the correct age and place, and no other Benjamins have been found in any other records.
    • There are 2 daughters listed in this census, Chester and Mary. Daughter Mary had already passed away in 1856.
    • Speculation: Could Chester by Jeptha? Could Mary be his wife?
    • Perhaps a neighbor gave census information, and gave it very wrong. This one is baffling to me.[30]
