Abigail Bayles, the daughter of Daniel Bayles and Joanna Lake, was born 26 June 1744, when her parents resided in New Jersey. They moved to Maryland between 1757 and 1762, to Louden County, Virginia before 1775, and to Washington County Tennessee, in 1778-9. This source has no record of her marriage or her death.

Abigail married James Frier about 1763 in Cecil Co., Maryland.

She is mentioned in the tax lists of Loudoun Co., VA in 1771, the year of her husband's death.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Abigail by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Abigail:

I'm glad you found the information useful. It's always wonderful to discover more data about our ancestors. When I first started I had virtually no information past my grandparents and over the years have accumulated close to 2000 ancestors going back to the 1600's.

I agree there are a lot of mistakes out there. I've found a lot about my early family.

One last bit that makes it clear that James Frier had to marry Abigail Bayles: Since we know that George Kilgore and Robert Muir were uncles to James Frier's sons, The only way this could happen is if James married a sister of George Kilgore or Martina Bayles. Since George had no sister Abigail, the only option left is James Frier married Abigail Bayles. The same follows for Robert Muir. His wife Phebe had to be a sister of James Frier or of Martina Bayles. Since we know from James Frier's fathers will that he had no sister named Phebe, Robert Muir's wife must also be a Bayles.

I can go ahead and take Abigail Bayless off as the wife of John Henry Hines and add back Abigail Seaton with a reference to Ken Hinds pages so the record is correct again. You can add into John Henry Hinds profile whatever data you want from Ken Hinds site.

Thanks, that's some really great stuff. I believe my aunt knew about the 1924 article in the Rockwood Times when she started her research. From comments she made, our family connection to John Henry Hinds was a surprise to her since most of his descendants around Rockwood were apparently well to do and our family would have been considered impoverished.

Thank you for shedding some light on my ancestry. I know there are mistakes since a lot of information was passed by word of mouth and I have found misspellings and other mistakes in census and other records.

Hi John,

Thank you for your bio and information on what you know about John Hinds. I found it very interesting .

I found an incredibly detailed site about john Henry Hinds and Abigail that I've been looking for done by Ken Hinds, who is evidently a very detailed researcher. http://hindskw.com/KennethHinds/761.html. I think the 12 pages of material on his site will give you a much better feel for where John Hinds lived and worked and on his life and marriages. He thinks Abigail Seaton is a much stronger candidate for John's wife based on documentary records. This site site gives dozens of detailed references about John Hinds from his birth to death and quotes deeds, wills, court records. I could copy it here but I think it is better to go there yourself because it has a lot of details that I'm sure you'll want.

Ken Hinds also wrote a page on Abigail. I had corresponded with him some time ago and am the referenced researcher on that page. http://hindskw.com/KennethHinds/971.html

He agrees with my interpretation of the marriages of the Frier, Bayles, Kilgore, and Muir families. and has posted the reasons and his agreement that Abigail was not a Bayless. and on who she might be on the Abigail page of his site.

What I know about John Henry Hinds was that he was a Captain in the North Carolina Dragoons. They were Loyalist during the first three years of the Revolutionary War and then switched over to the Continental Army about 1779-1780. From what I understand he fought at the Battle of Guilford Court House in March 1781.

John Henry Hinds settled in Anderson County Tennessee (borders Knox County) after the Revolution. Unfortunately, my great grandfather (who I have been told was not pleasant fellow and had multiple wives) and grandfather were probably not much help in passing down information. My great-grandmother, Sarah Garrison Peters, died around 1909 long before my grandmother and grandfather married and my father, aunt and uncles never had a chance to know her. I have more definitive information on him from the Findagrave index.

My Aunt did a lot of research years ago in local records around that region. My ancestors on my father's side are from Anderson, Rhea, Meigs, and Roane Counties in Tennessee. I was born in Oak Ridge, Tennessee and lived in Tennessee until I was commissioned in the Navy in 1978.

Here's some more on the Bayless connection. I corresponded with a Bayless researcher several years ago who said that the main reason he knew that researchers named Abigail as a Bayless was that one John Bayles (Jr) was executor of the will of John Henry Hinds in 1810 in Knox County, Tennessee. I read this will and then researched the Bayles family some more. and found that this John Bayles (Jr) was a grandson of Daniel Bayles and Joanna Lake, son of the John Bayles (Sr) who lived in Washington County, TN until he died in 1823. John Bayles Jr went to Knox Co., TN sometime in the 1790s from Washington Co., TN after he married. This John Bayles Jr would be a nephew of Abigail Bayles.

Some of the data on John Henry Hinds appears to be contradictory. I noted that his three marriages were given as in Morris Co., NJ but that his children were listed as born in Guilford Co., NC. Not sure if there are records to back up where he actually lived during those years.

Since both John Hinds and John Bayles Jr went to Knox County from separate places, it is unlikely they knew each other before meeting in Knox County.

By the way, I have very strong DNA connections to the Bayles/Bayless family with over 120 proven DNA matches on Ancestry (just the people who have put trees up) with Bayles/Bayless descendants, one of the largest numbers I have anywhere, which gives me certainty that my line comes from Phebe Bayles, the sister of Abigail Bayles. I have no idea how many there are without trees.

If George Kilgore married Martina Bayles, which is proven from family records, and Robert Muir married Phebe Bayles, proven through DNA, then the only was both men could be uncles of James Frier's children is if he married Abigail Bayles.

I don't have many Tennessee connections except the Bayles but it sounds right that the records there are not nearly as complete. People did move around a lot but it looks like from what I see that the only place a Bayles and Hinds lived near enough to know each other was in Knox County Tennessee decades after Abigail Bayles marriage.

I've enjoyed this conversation. Hopefully we can work out together a way to proceed. I'm going to look for more records for John Henry Hinds. They may help.

The only evidence I have is a family tree my aunt did about 50 years ago. I have found some mistakes over the years. Besides local records that she had, I don't have her sources. Since she passed away over 10 years ago it is doubtful l would be able to find her sources. I am not sure how familiar you are with East Tennessee, from what I have seen my ancestors were something straight out of the McCoy's and Hatfield's. Keeping good records was not high on their priority list.

Hi John, to answer your questions in a lot of detail, James Frier died before September 10, 1771 in Loudoun Co., Virginia. George Kilgore was executor of his will and John Bayless (brother of Abigail, Martina and Phebe) (spelled Boyles in the will), witnessed the will. In addition, James Frier named his first son Daniel, which is not a name found in the Frier family but is the name of the boy's grandfather if my reconstruction is correct. John Bayless and George Kilgore were also witnesses of Robert Muir's will.

Linking several deeds and wills makes Abigail's name clear. James Frier Sr. died in Chester County PA,in 1766, leaving two sons James and Robert and two daughters. A year later, James Frier and Abigail his wife of Lowdon , VA, Robert Frier and his wife Jane of Lowden, VA (the spelling in the will), Andrew Bear and wife Jane Fryer, and Abel Hodgson and his wife Elizabeth Fryer, who were all named in the will, sold land to settle the estates. At that time both James and Robert Frier lived in Loudoun Co., VA so this clearly shows the name of James Frier's wife as Abigail and that they were in Loudoun Co., VA as early as 1766.

Abigail shows up in the Tax lists of Cameron Parish, Loudoun Co., VA in 1771 as Abigail Fryer. Since she was still in Loudoun Co Va in 1771 at least, I think the possibility of her marrying John Hinds is remote since he was living in New Jersey having children three years earlier. I also would think that if she married him, her children would have gone with her to North Carolina with the Hinds instead of ending up in Washington Co., TN.

In looking at material on the Hinds family, I see you have the earliest children of John Henry Hinds born in 1768 and 1771 or so in New Jersey and later Guilford County, NC. It would appear that since Abigail Bayles was gone from New Jersey in 1762, when her father Daniel Bayles, then of Cecil Co., Maryland, purchased land in Cecil Co., MD (Deed book 9 page 458) it's hard to see how she would have met John Hinds. In 1764, Daniel Bayles purchased land from James Frier Sr., our Jame Fryer's father. Also in 1764, Daniel Bayles purchased all the household goods of Robert Muir. (Deed book 10, page 43) Daniel Bayles sold his property in Cecil Co., MD in 1770 (Deed book 11, page 525) and moved with most of his family to Loudoun Co., VA. My belief is that George Kilgore, Robert Muir and James Frier married Martina, Phebe, and Abigail Bayles during the time all four families lived in Cecil Co., MD, then by the late 1760s all had moved to Loudoun Co., VA. At the time of James Frier's death, his children ranged in age from probably two to seven at most.

This shows the close connection between all four families, the Frier, Bayles, Muir, and Kilgore.

Around 1785, Daniel Bayles and most of his family moved to Washington County, Tennessee and James Fryer's son Robert Fryer shows up there as well. He is in the tax lists there in 1793-1795 and moved to Madison Co., KY in about 1797. I believe that Abigial moved with her father Daniel Bayles to Tennessee with her children sometime around 1785.

I would be interested in seeing what actual evidence there is that Abigail Bayles married John Henry Hinds.

I hope this helps

When did James Frier die? Could she have been married twice? Were they married at all since the will names no wife?

Regarding Abigail Bayless and John Hinds, I have recently completed research that shows that Abigail Bayless cannot be the wife of John Hinds. Instead, her husband is James Frier of Loudoun Co., VA. Daniel Bayles (Bayless) was the father of three daughters and a number of sons who are all well documented. The three daughters, Phebe, Martina and Abigail, had no known husbands as of the writing of Howard Green Bayles book on the Bayles family. To date neither Martina nor Phebe's marriages were identified.

In my research on Robert Muir (Muir-74) and his wife Phebe, whose maiden name has been erroneously stated as Frier for decades, I discovered the true maiden name for Phebe. In a will in Loudoun Co., VA in 1771, James Frier bound each of his two sons, Robert and Daniel, to the boys uncles George Kilgore (Kilgore-777) and Robert Muir(Muir-74). James did not name his wife in the will. This has led to a lot of speculation about how these relationships came about.

I discovered through family records in the Kilgore family dating back to the early 1800's that George Kilgore's wife was named Martina Bailey or Bales and that she was born on a date very close to that in the Howard Green Bayles book. The question became, how did George Kilgore and Robert Muir become uncles to did the three men, who were unrelated to each other, become uncles.

Since George Kilgore married Martina Bayles, the only ways for him to be an uncle was if James Frier married a Kilgore or a Bayles. We know of no Kilgores he could have married. The only way for Robert Muir to be an uncle to the boys was for him to marry a Bayles or a Frier, a sister of James. By We know by his father's James Frier Sr's will in Chester Co., PA and a deed from all his father's heirs selling his real property, that James had no sister named Phebe, and that his wife's name was Abigail. This means that the only way for this will to work is that our three unrelated me married three sisters, Martina, Abigail, and Phebe. I call them the Lost Bayles Sisters since the Bayles family had no idea what happened to them.

I have more detailed proofs and sources on my website www.MuirFrierKilgore Bayles.com

I plan to fix this last relationship by doing the following, unattach Abigail Bayless as the wife of John Henry Hines, rebuild the Abigail Seaton profile or a profile with no last name because Seaton appears to be in dispute. Attach Abigail Bayless to a new profile for James Frier Jr, with proofs and sources for everything.

Would love to hear any comments on this so we can collaborate on correcting this information.

Bayless-354 and Bayless-14 appear to represent the same person because: Exact date, same spouse and child

Difference in date of birth to be noted in the biography until a source can be added.

There is no source for the1788 death and there is a child born in 1789 (Hinds-121), It is likely before 1791 as John Henry Hinds remarried then. So far I have found no sources confirming the death date or that hinds-121 is her child. Would appreciate any help.
Previously this profile had a 1788 date of death. Why was that removed? Is there a source that provides a better date?
