Biography

Delphine Bayley was born in 1841, the daughter of Daniel Bayley and Elizabeth Munson. She made the long trek by ox team with her family across the plains to Oregon when just 4 years old. She was living there in Oregon with her parents when the 1850 census was taken.[1]

She was first married 3 Jan. 1861 in Yamhill County, OR to Robert Bailey. Nixon[2] who was born about 1836 in IL. The couple were already recorded living together in Dalles Precinct, Wasco County, OR when the 1860 census[3] was taken. Robert was a carpenter and builder. But the couple were divorced early and had no children. Robert Nixon was living at Oakland, CA in 1873, the same year he was re-married to Martha M. (Johnston) Applegate.

Delphine “Bayley” was married a second time 2 Jan. 1879 in OR to Philip J. Beutter who was born about 1845 in Germany. They were divorced by 1880, at which time Delphine “Bayley” was "divorced" and living in Portland, OR as a housekeeper when the census was taken.[4] She and Philip had no children. Philip Beutter remarried, had a family and died 22 Feb. 1919 at Los Angeles, CA, age 77.

Delphine “Bayley” was married a third time on 3 July 1888 at Portland, OR to Thomas Jefferson Whalen. Thomas and Delphine Whalen were living together at Portland in 1893, but divorced by 1899. Delphine had no children by any of her husbands. Delphine Whalen was living at Portland, OR in 1899 and 1901. Delphine Whalen was living in the home of a niece, Jesse Milloy, at Portland, OR when the 1910 census was taken.[5] Delphine was listed as divorced, but living with a “partner”, William M. Smith, at Portland, OR when the 1920 census was taken.[6] Mr. Smith was a widower and 34 years younger.

She passed away in 1929, at age 88.[7] She was the last survivor of her family. She was buried in Rose City Cemetery, Portland, OR.[8] Delphine was considered an Oregon pioneer.[9]
