Biography

RUTH BAILEY,[1] b. at Lunenburg, 7 Jan 1740/1[2] daughter of Josiah Bayle and Elizabeth Stevens;[3] d. at Lunenburg, 2 May 1774;[4] m. at Lunenburg, 8 Feb 1763,[5] ASA CARLTON, b. at Bradford, MA, 13 May 1734[6] son of Nathaniel and Abigail (Dane) Carlton; Asa d. at Lunenburg, 28 Jan 1802.[7] Asa married second Sarah Stone on 23 Jun 1775.

Ruth and Asa lived in the extreme north part of Lunenburg. Asa served on the school committee in 1779 and constable and collector in 1781.[8]

On 10 November 1783, Asa Carlton of Lancaster with his wife Sarah, in consideration of £30, conveyed to Josiah Bailey, Jr. of Lancaster one half of a tract of land being part of lot 24 and lot 25 of the second division.[9]

Children

Ruth Bailey and Asa Carlton were parents of five children born at Lunenburg.

i ASA CARLTON, b. 14 Feb 1764; d. at Derby, VT, 19 Mar 1838; m. at Lunenburg, 21 Jan 1790, NANCY GARDNER, baptized at Lunenburg, 18 Oct 1772 daughter of Daniel and Emma (Rea) Gardner; Nancy d. at Derby, 16 Jul 1824.

ii BETTY CARLTON, b. 14 Jun 1766; d. at Dublin, NH, after 1831. Betty did not marry. She was dismissed from the church in Lunenburg to the church in Dublin, NH on 16 Oct 1831.[10]

iii RUTH CARLTON, b. 24 Jul 1768; d. at Lunenburg, 4 Jun 1791.

iv CALVIN CARLTON, b. 26 Jun 1770; d. at Woodstock, VT, 4 May 1837; m. at Lunenburg, 16 Sep 1798, ABIGAIL RITTER, b. at Lunenburg, 20 Apr 1777 daughter of David and Abigail (Lowe) Ritter; Abigail d. at Woodstock, 5 May 1862.

v LUTHER CARLTON, b. 26 Aug 1772; d. at Marlborough, NH, 14 Mar 1839; m. at Lunenburg, 10 Apr 1796, MARTHA ROBINSON, b. at Lunenburg, 13 Feb 1777 daughter of Ebenezer and Martha (Kingman) Robinson; Martha d. at Marlborough, 11 Feb 1848.
