Eunice was born in 1910. She was the daughter of Mac Baylis and Rachel Wheeler. She passed away about 2006. [1]
When Eunice was a baby, about 10 months old, her mother had a terrible accident in their home. According to the Mt. Pleasant Times, on July 28, 1911, Mrs. George M. Baylis was horribly burned yesterday afternoon. She thought the fire in the range was out and was applying polish (blacking) to the front of the stove. Some of the blacking liquid must have dripped down into the ashes causing a gas to form. Suddenly there was an explosion and a moment later she found herself enveloped in flames. Crazed with fright, she ran into yard, which only fanned the fire. She said she was afraid for her children.
Rachel "Mae" was born in Williamston, Mi. Sept. 13, 1875, and married Mr. George M. Baylis on November 15, 1899. She leaves a husband and five children. From notes from the Mt. Pleasant Times, July 28th and August 04, 1911
After the accident Eunice went to live with her Aunt Ethelyn Birnbaum, who was her mother's sister or cousin. I never understood exactly which.
Ethelyn and her husband, a man whose last name was Birnbaum, adopted Aunt Eunice, and she seldom saw her family and or siblings, and was brought up as their daughter. As she was a small infant, she had no recollection of siblings. When Eunice was about 18 years old, she met and fell in love with Francis Robert Morris. They were married. Somehow Francis Morris knew the story of Eunice and he told her that in Lansing, Mi. she had a father and four siblings. I am not sure how this happened but Uncle Frank took his bride to meet her siblings. Of course her mother, Ethelyn Birnbaum, was very angry with him.
This as I remember it being told to me by my mother, Ethelyn Purcell, and Aunt Eunice and Aunt Marion Stark.
Aunt Eunice was preceded in death by her husband, Francis Robert Morris and is survived by six children, many grand children and great-grand children, nieces and nephews.
