Biography

CHAPTER I THOMAS BAYLIS FAMILY Many of Thomas Baylis' records are found in the book "Historical Collections of Salisbury, Litchfield Co., Ct." by Samuel Church, and in the first and second volumes of the land records of Salisbury,Ct. Thomas Baylis, who figures prominently in the first town meetings, had bought, in 1736, the southern portion of Thomas Lamb's Hinman grant on the Riga Brook. The house in which he lived was evidently on unsurveyed land below this grant, for, in 1738, he quit claimed to the Governor and Company "a parcel of land where my dwelling and malt shop now stand, bounded east by a brook and on all sides by country land." This tract of 10 acres came into possession of Thomas Lamb. Lamb sold this particular tract in 1742 back to Thomas Baylis and in 1747 Thomas Baylis resold it to Joseph Lee. After this sale, Thomas Baylis left Salisbury. The book "History of Little Nine Partners of Northeast Precinct,Pine Plains, Dutchess Co. NY" by Isaac Huntting, describes how George Clinton, deputy colonial surveyor in 1743, "went to Salisbury and spent the night at the house of Thomas Bayless". The next day 2 Indians took him to a marked tree "standing in a cleared field of Thomas Bayless." Town meetings were held at his home so probably he lived in the most central location of Salisbury. The children of Thomas Baylis were recorded in the second volume of land records, and reproduced in "History of Salisbury, Ct." pg. 31 by Samuel Church. They are: Richard Baylis b 13 Mar 1736 son of Thomas Baylis George Baylis b 22 Jan 1738 son of Thomas (11) Margit Baylis b 1 Dec 1739 dau of Thomas John Baylis b 21 Dec 1741 son of Thomas John Balis is our ancestor and the subject of Chapter 2. Sarah Baylis b 30 Nov 1743 dau of Thomas and Sarah A Richard Balis is found in a list of Dutchess Co. N.Y. militia from 11 July to 31 July 1755. A deed of Thomas Baylis of Salisbury to Joseph Lee of Fairfield in March 1746/7 shows Thomas reserving a" piece of land near the highway where my children was buried". The Hale Collection, Cemetery Inscriptions in Salisbury shows the Bayliss Cemetery with graves of 3 children of Thomas Bayliss. There is a possibility that Ann Baliss who married Caleb Lamb 11 Dec 1765 at Sharon, Litchfield Co., Conn, was of the Thomas Baylis family. I find Thomas Baylis later in the tax records of Dutchess Co. N.Y., Northeast District. The years I noted were 1753,1754 and 1755.

It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Thomas by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Thomas:
