Biography

William Baynes was born on 28 Nov 1789. He was the son of Christopher Baynes and Nanny Gregory.

William Baynes, son of Christopher & Nanny, was christened on 30 Nov 1789 in Wokingham, Berkshire.[1]

William's father was made a Baronet in 1801.

William Baynes, Esq, son of Sir C Baynes, married Julia Smith, daughter of Major-General Smith, on 14 Dec 1815 - a marriage notice was published in the Norfolk Chronicle on 23 Dec 1815.[2]

William and Julia had seven children:

  1. Julia (Baynes) Cowley (1817-1892) [born in England]
  2. William John Walter Baynes (1820-1897) [born in England]
  3. Walter Francis Baynes (1824-1914) [born in Macau, China]
  4. Charlotte Helen (Baynes) Jephson (1827-1913) [born in Geneva, Switzerland]
  5. Charles Christopher Baynes (1829-1907) [born in Macau]
  6. Mary Ann Louisa (Baynes) Hamilton (1831-1913) [born in Macau]
  7. Frances Mary Baynes (1836-1843) [christened in England]

William worked for the East India Company in Canton during the 1820s and 1830s - by 1830 he was President of the Select Committee. The Qing government banned foreign women from entering Canton, so his family resided in Macau. William's wife Julia was the first European woman to openly enter Canton, despite the ban, which caused some conflict with the local authorities.[3]

William became the second in his family to hold the title of Baronet in 1837 upon the death of his father.

In 1841 Sir William Baynes (50-54) lived at Portland Place in St Marylebone, Middlesex with two of his sons: Waller [Walter] (15-19) and Christopher (11), as well as two others [likely servants].[4] Unable to locate his wife or other children on this census.

In 1851 Sir William Banes (age 61, Baronet) was a visitor in Kent.[5] His family lived at Portland Place in Marylebone: wife Julia (57, Baronets Wife) and three of their children: Charlotte (23, Baronet Daughter), Louisa (19, Baronet Daughter), and Charles (21, Baronet Son), as well as five servants.

Unable to locate William on the 1861 census.

William Baynes passed away on 1 Jan 1866, aged 76 years. His death was registered in Marylebone in the first quarter of the year.[6]
