We used to eat at the 'children's table at mealtimes, and theold adage of children should beseen and not heard was adhered to. I remember coming in to lunch dressed in a very modest two piece top and shorts with a bare 2 inches between top and shorts, Granny was shocked an in a horrified voice told me to 'go and put some clothes on child'. Apart from these rather Victorian ideas she was wonderful. She made the best rock cakes, shepherds pie with shortcrust pastry on top, rabbit pie and gramma pie with 'flies' in it.

She drank her coffee and tea piping hot and would tell the rest of the family to 'drink up' so she could wash up and go to bed, the family would still be trying to 'drink up' without burning their mouths.

The sand mining at Boulder beach in the 60's.

As kids we spent school holidays at Granny's and were housed in a large army tent at the side of the house. At night we could see the sand mining plant with its lights on, we thought it looked like a castle at night. (Remnants of the sand mining activity of the 1930's to the late 60's, which had a significant impact on the dune and foreshore of much of the coast. Remnants of the old sand mining road which is still prominent south of Flat Rock and behind Sharpes Beach, but now hidden amongst regrowth. Early photos show the road stretching from behind Angels Beach to Skennars Head and on to Boulder Beach as the main service road to the industry.)

We could also watch the light from Byron Bay lighthouse flashing as it rotated around. We always knew what the time was as we could hear Granny's mantle clock with its Westminster chimes during the night.

(The ‘Iron Peg’ located at the outermost rocky point below Boulder Beach headland, installed by resident Charles Bulwinkel in the early 1900's as a safety measure.) My Uncle Michael is a keen fisherman and often fished from this point - He has even rescued people washed off the rocks here as the tide came in.

Madeline Davey was my Grandmother (Granny. She had a lovely house at Skenners Head, NSW where we spent some wonderfull school holidays in the 1960's. The house is no longer there as the NSW Govt. declared the area crown land and demolished the house. I found this article of the area written since then which mentions a previous dwelling and garden, lots of gingerand oleander plantings. I remember Granny had a very large ginger planted halfway down the walk from the house to the beach.

Article - Sharps Creek to Shag Rock Vegetation Management Plan

Site 1.8 Cottonwood colony and associated Littoral Rainforest regrowth The area has been highly modified, exotic garden remnants are evidence of two dwellings (now absent) that were on the site. Exotic Ginger and Oleander have formed extensive groves and will ultimately have to be removed. Fragmented LRF regrowth can be seen in addition to dense groves of Banksia integrifolia some of which were planted by a previous resident. Site 1.8a). Eastern side of the Ginger patches. Large exotic ginger patches associated with past home gardens. Iron Peg (Sites 1.9 to 1.11) High concentrations of exotic species occur west of Iron Peg. Many of these originate from the gardens of old residences
