Biography

Martha was born in 1859. She passed away in 1940.[1] [2] [3]

In the 1860 census Martha is 1 years old and is living with her parents in Scott County, Virginia around the Estillville post office region. [4]

In the 1870 census Martha is 11 years old and the family is living in Fulkerson, Scott County, Virginia. [5]

On 6 September 1877, Martha married William Jasper Burgin in Lee County, Virginia. [6]

In the 1880 census Martha is married to William and they are living in the District 1 & 2 area of Pulaski County, Kentucky. [7]

In the 1900 Census Martha states that she was born in October of 1864 and that they are living in Hickory Nut, Pulaski County, Kentucky. Martha is the mother of 7 children with 6 of those children living. Martha also states that she can read and write. [8]

In the 1910 census Martha is 51 years old and is living with her family in Saline, Pulaski County, Kentucky. They are living on what is spelled as Colllombia Road, but most likely Columbia Road. Martha states that they have been married 33 years and that she is the mother of 8 children with 7 of those children still living. [9]

In the 1920 Census Martha states that she is 53 years old and was born in 1867. She is widowed and is living in Salene, Pulaski County, Kentucky with her daughter Winnie on Columbia Road. Martha states that her occupation is Farm, and that she owns her own farm and there is no mortgage. [10]

In the 1930 Census, Martha (spelled Marika in the census) is 70 years old, states that she was born in 1860, and is living in the District 2 area of Pulaski County, Kentucky. Martha is now renting her home which is on a farm and has a value of $500. Martha other details are that she was 20 when she was first married, never attended school and cannot read or write. [11]

In the 1940 census, Martha is 80 years old and is living with her daughter in Pulaski County, Kentucky on Booll Town Road Stop. Martha states that the highest grade in elementary school she completed was the 5th grade. [12]

Research Notes

Martha was most likely born in 1858 due to the fact that in the 1860 census enumerated in June 1860 that she was already 1 year old and would be turning 2 that October. An 1859 birth date as well conflicts with her sisters March 1860 birth date which is well documented.
