William Beal (later Beale) was born in 1845 in Cogges, near Witney in Oxfordshire[1]. He was baptised at Cogges parish church on 8 June 1845, as the son of James and Harriet Beal, of Newland. His father was described as a labourer. [Newland is a part of the parish of Cogges on the outskirts of Witney.] [2] [3] [4]
In 1851 William Beal was living at Newland with his parents, James and Harriet, and their other children. His age was given as 5, implying a birth date in 1845 or 1846. His birthplace was given as Cogges, Oxfordshire. [3]
William Beal (bachelor, aged 23), a labourer, of Cogges, son of James Beal, labourer; and Ann Clare (spinster, aged 25), a gloveress, of Finstock, daughter of Elias Dunsby, labourer; were married at Holy Trinity church in Finstock in Oxfordshire on 25 December 1868. [4]
The family lived near Witney for a few years before moving to Colnbrook in Buckinghamshire in the 1870s.
At the time of the 1881 census, William was living at Colnbrook in Buckinghamshire with his wife Ann and their children. His age was given as 37, implying a birth date in 1843 or 1844. No birthplace was recorded. He was a farm labourer. [5]
At the time of the1891 census, William was living at 9 Garden Cottages in Colnbrook with his wife and their children. His age was given as 48, implying a birth date in 1842 or 1843. His birthplace was given as Witney, Oxfordshire. He was a labourer. [6]
William Beale died later in 1891. [7]
Wife's name: The birth record for son William from 1870 gives the maiden name of Clare for this William, as does the record for Foster, born in 1873.

William's mother Jame's birth was registered with Mother's maiden name Brown. His mother was Harriet Holbrough. She was illegimate and baptised in Little Barrington, Gloucestershire on 16th February 1812 to mother Sarah Holborough[8]. Sarah Holborough married George Brown in Little Barrington, Gloucestershire on 10th October 1814[9].
