Biography

The maiden name of Ruth is UNKNOWN, widow of Richard Vanson, Sr & John Tiplady, Sr . Years ago she was named Ruth Beale, the daughter of Thomas & Alice Beale.

The confusion arose as Ruth and the Beale's shared grandchildren.

Elizabeth (Tiplady) Powell & Rebecca (Tiplady) Goodwin are both granddaughters of Alice & Thomas Beale (Maternal) and of John Tiplady Sr & Ruth. (Paternal)

Ruth - 1st married Richard Vanson, Sr.

Richard Vanson, Sr. died before 1647 York County. Alas, York Records are missing for 6 Dec 1648-8 May 1652. Through Guardian records etc. we learn Ruth & Richard Vanson had two sons - Richard Vanson, Jr born about 1638 & Arthur Vanson born about 1646 & died in York about 1648 , father of 5 children.

Deposition of Arthur Vanson, about 25, says deponent was aboard the ship "Happy Entrance" with my father, Mr. John Tiplady, when they brought me a piece of paper to subscribe and accordingly did so. Arthur (V) Vanson - Sworn in court 26 Aug. 1672

On 10 Apr 1697 - Ruth had only one surviving child at the time she wrote her will, Elizabeth Tiplady Reade/Lucas: "Unto my loving daughter, Elizabeth Lucas one chest of drawers and all that is in itt, except the boyes cloths and also the great brass kettle. All my estate which is not mentioned in this will unto my loveing daughter to dispose of itt equally amongst them as she things (sic) fitt, but pray remember Sarah Vanson"

Children of daughter Elizabeth Tiplady Read or Reade - Lucas as mentioned in the will of Ruth:

Unto Grandson, John Read one feather bed & what belongs to it. Unto Grandson Thomas Read one feather bed & 1/2 the stock of hoggs, a chest & kettle. Thomas was appointed one of the executors. Unto granddaughter Elizabeth Lucas - one pair of and irons that is in my roome, 1 pair of tongs, one iron dripping pan & 1 grid iron. Unto granddaughter Margoe Lucas my little trunk & all that is in it. For John Lucas - 10 shillings to buy a ring

Children of Ruth's son John Tiplady Jr dec'd, (whose will was proved in 1689) 1. Unto Elizabeth Powell - 10 shillings to buy a ring

2. Unto Rebecka Tiplady one pair great and irons that stands in the kitching, also the great pewter dish called the charger.

(Elizabeth & Rebecca were children of her son John Tiplady by his first wife, Elizabeth Beale.

3. Unto granddaughter Susanna Tiplady one brass pestill and morter and alsoe one pewter flagon.

(Susanna was the daughter of John Tiplady & 2nd wife, Rebecca Wythe)


Children of Anne Tiplady Moore - Smythe , who died before 1685, who had been the wife of John Smith/Smyth who died in 1687.

1. Unto grandson John Smyth one black mare & all the remainder part of the stock of hoggs which is left, and also one pyed cow and her calfe and one black heiffer called Brindle about 3 years old, a feather bed - the same bed which I lay upon & two iron potts & pott hooks & racks, a gun, pestell, chest, wainscott chair, 2 pewter dishes, new saddle & bridle to the mare. John Smith shall have his full share of the cropp that is made and what cattle I have already given him for him to have all the future increase for to come. He is one of the executors appointed by Ruth.

2. Henry Smith 10 shillings to buy a ring.

24 Feb 1697/9 - Susanna Evans & Henry Watkins being summoned as evidence for Thomas Harris against Thomas Read and John Smyth, exors of Ruth Tiplady. Each to be paid 40L of tobacco for 1 days attendance at court. Capt. Thomas Ballard hath judgment in ballance upon an action of debt against Thomas Read & John Smyth, executors of Ruth Tiplady, for 140 pounds of tobacco. (same day) Capt. William Buckner administrator of Nathaniel James hath judgment against Thomas Read & John Smyth, executors of Ruth Tiplady for 269# tobacco in balance of the decedent Tiplady's bill.

3 May 1687 York Co., Va.- Will of John Tiplady (son of Ruth) - "unto my naturall mother, Ruth Tiplady, one horse called George which horse I had by the marriage of my late wife." - Dec 1689 - York Co., Va. - Upon the petition of Mrs. Ruth Tiplady itt is ordered that the executrix and overseers of the last will & testament of Capt. John Tiplady deliver the horse bequeathed to Ruth Tiplady by the will.

24 Jan 1694/5 - pg 89 -Elizabeth Powell being returned subpenyed as evidence for Ruth Tiplady against Jonathan Dowse assignee of William Dodson, is ordered to be paid 2 days attendance and each time coming and going.

pg 90 - Capt. Thomas Ballard, High Sheriff, hath an attachment against the estate of Ruth Tiplady for L3.15.7 sterling judgment being now confirmed against Thomas Ballard for the nonappearance of Tiplady to answer the suite of Jonathan Dowse as assignee of William Dodson in an action of debt for the like sume.


Ruth was born about 1630. She passed away in 1698.
