John James Beel (also recorded as Beale) was born in Cornwall, most likely Falmouth. A christening record exists for a John James Beels [sic]: father Richard, mother Grace. His father's name is confirmed as Richard (recorded at John's marriage as a sailor), so this is a likely match[1].[2]

A John Beale, died 1879, is buried in Hokitika. Given the date and location, it's likely this is the correct John Beale/Beel.[6] The death announcement in the local newspaper lists his age as 53, which matches up fairly well.[7]
