Biography

Birth

Amphillis Beale was from a large Worcestershire family, and born in about 1717, at Kidderminster, the daughter of Benjamin.Beale, and Hannah Perks. She was baptised on 25 February 1717, at St Mary's Anglican Church, at Kidderminster. [1]

Marriage

In 1744, Amphillis Beale married John Rann of Birmingham, by licence, at Kidderminster. [2] [3]
Twelve months later, in May 1745, Amphillis's father, Benjamin Beale, died at Kidderminster. [4] He was a successful merchant who operated trows (cargo boats), transporting goods on the River Severn. He wrote his Will in 1742, leaving money to Amphillis, and on 12 May 1744, just after her marriage to John Rann, he added a codicil, revoking the legacy to Amphillis, stating, “Since the making of my Will, I have married (off) my daughter Amphilis, paid and secured to be paid to her husband John Rann her portion."

Children

John Rann and Amphillis Beale had four children who were all baptised at Birmingham in Warwickshire, England;
  1. Amphillis Rann, Baptism 27 Feb 1750, at St Martin's Church. [5]
  2. Hannah Rann, Baptism 26 Oct 1753, at St Peter and St Paul, Aston.[6]
  3. John Rann, Baptism 28 May 1756, at St Peter and St Paul, Aston.[7]
  4. Thomas Rann, Baptism 20 Feb 1758, at St Peter and St Paul, Aston.[8]
Their son, John Rann born 1756, outlived his siblings, Amphillis, Hannah, and Thomas, and died at the age of 98 years, in 1854 at Dudley, making a Will, [9] confirming the relationship of all of the above siblings.

Second Marriage

It is assumed that Amphillis's husband John Rann died in about 1760 in Birmingham. In 1766, Amphillis Rann, a widow, married William Smith, a bachelor, by licence, at St Phillips Church, Birmingham.[10]

Death

Mrs Amphillis Smith was a widow when she passed away in 1798, and was buried at St Martin's Churchyard, in Birmingham.[11]

  • The Will of John Rann of Dudley who died in 1854 aged 98 years, confirms the relationship of the above four siblings. [9] John outlived his siblings, and named both Hannah Phillips and Amphillis Birks as "my late sister", and Thomas Rann as "my late brother".
