1898: Marie Vaughan BEALE was born on April 16th 1898 at Grove House, Grove Passage in Bethnal Green, London, England. She was the youngest daughter of George and Emily Beale and was subsequently baptised at St Anthony's Church in Stepney on May 25th 1898. [1]
1901: UK Census on March 31st 1901 Marie is 2 years old and living with her parents and siblings at Grove House, Grove Passage in Bethnal Green.
1911: From the 1911 UK Census on April 2nd, Marie's parents have moved to 55 Montague Road in Leytonstone, West Ham. Marie is now 12 years old and is attending school in the area.
At the start of WWI in 1914, Marie, having been involved with the local Anglican Church where with her beautiful singing voice, was becoming a strong member of the community. She joined the Red Cross and when the NZ Expeditionary Force Command established a Headquarters at Hornchurch in Romford, in Essex, Marie joined the Volunteer Aid Detachment to help with the NZ Contingent requirement at Hornchurch. At this time, Marie’s oldest sister, Emily who married Percy Coleman in 1906 was living at 4 Glengariff Elm Grove in Hornchurch so Marie was able to live with them. In early 1916, Marie met a dashing young NZ Army Lieutenant, Ernest Gabites, Ernest having been released from hospital at Endsleigh Palace Hospital where he was recovering from wounds received in the Dardanelles in 1915. For a few months at Hornchurch and after further training, Ernest was transferred to “Sling Camp” as a Training Bombing Instructor with the rank of Captain. With some leave available, Ernest visited the Beale family where he proposed marriage to Marie and on December 23 1916 they were married at St Margaret & Columba Church in Leytonstone.
1918: Marie and Ernest's first child, Eric Vaughan Gabites was born on January 19th 1918 in Leytonstone, London.
1919: Marie immigrated to New Zealand as a first class passenger on the S.S. Briton along with husband Ernest and baby Vaughan (10 months old). The "Briton" was being used as H.M. Transport for the NZ Expeditionary Forces and arrived in NZ in January 1919. During the voyage, Marie and Ernest entertained the passengers with songs, they both had exceptional singing voices. Setting up family life in Dunedin, Marie fell pregnant again and on December 18th 1919 gave birth to twins, Ernest Arthur and Marie Emily. Sadly, Marie suffered with Eclampsia and died 3 days after the twin’s birth.
Marie died on 21 Dec 1919 at age of 21 years in [2]Dunedin, and was buried at Andersons Bay Cemetery in Dunedin, on 23rd December 1919.[3]
