On most census records, his birth year is 1859; but his find-a-grave memorial claims a birth year of 1857.
In the 1880 census, he is single, living on Abbott Road, in Buffalo, New York, with his parents, John and Mary, and several siblings, farming.[2]
In the 1900 census, they were living at 169 Hollywood, immediately above John Beale, b Mar 1822 in England, wife Mary, b Dec 1823 England and a son John born Sept 1846 in Canada. (Also John Jr’s just-married wife Mary, b Apr 1872 in PA.) .[3]
In 1910, they were still at 169 Hollywood Avenue; indicates an 1860 emigration from Canada for William.[4]
In 1920, they were still at 169 Hollywood Avenue, milk business. It’s clearly a family business; the sons are driving the milk trucks.[5]
In 1930, they were at 167 Hollywood Avenue; the only child living with them is son Howard W., working in the dairy business with his father. [6]
In 1940, they were at 167 Hollywood Avene; no children with them. He lists no occupation so is probably retired. [7]

When he first married (abt 1919) he was working in an "Aeroplane Plt". The year after the Depression started, he was managing a dairy-- likely his father-in-law's. Ten years later, he was an executive in a men's clothing manufacturing company. Children:
