Biography

Regarding the family of birth, the 1880 census indicates the Beall family lived in Washington Township, Ripley County, Indiana. Listed family members were: William R. (age 41), Henrietta (age 34), Mary Ella (age 16), William S. (age 13), John W. (age 11), Estella (age 9), James H. (age 7), Robert F. (age 5), Ira E. (age 3), Alma C. (age 2), and Jethro W. (7 months). The 1900 census states two more family members had been born. Namely, Bertha H. Beall (age 18 and born in 1882) and Cleveland Beall (age 15 and born in 1884).

The informant for the death certificate, Elmer Swinford, has her name listed as Ella M. Swinford. This is different than the listed name in the 1880 census, though the parentage and dates of birth and death are the same.

She married Levi Swinford on August 4, 1891, and even in the 1910 census, she is listed as "Mary E. Swinford (age 46)." Other listed family members are: Levi (age 41), Blanch (age 15), Elmer (age 13), Bessie (age 11), and Grace (age 8). They lived in Vigo County, Indiana at the time. The 1922 marriage license application for Grace, lists "Ella" as the mother and by then, the Swinford family had moved to Hillsdale, Indiana where they remained.

Levi preceded Mary in death. She died of congestive heart failure at the Vermillion County Hospital and is buried at the Helts Prairie Cemetery in Vermillion County, Indiana. Her headstone is engraved with wording as is written on her death certificate.
