Biography

Name

Her maiden name was Beall. She married her first cousin, Basil Beall, thus becoming Arianna (Beall) Beall.

The spelling of her first name is uncertain. "Ariana" and "Arianna" are both found in the sources used. The spelling "Arey Ann" is found in her baptism record. In the abstract of the will of her father, John Beall, d. 1800, the spelling is "Ariana"[1]; E. Heterick uses the spelling "Arianna." [2]

Birth 1762 & Parentage

"Arey Ann" Beall was baptized Oct 1762 at King George’s Parish, Province of Maryland. [1] [3]

According to two separate sources, Ariana Beall's date of birth was 02 Sep 1762. [4][5]

Arianna is listed as the third child of John Beall, b. 1728, and Mary Dent, b. ca 1731, d/o Peter Dent and Mary Brooke. Arianna is also included in the will of John Beall, d.1800. [1] [2]

Migration to Cincinnati, Ohio

The journey westward took place sometime after 1812, when she purchased land in Sharpsburg, and before 1833. "Ariana living in Cincinnati in 1833 according to nephew’s will." [1] It is uncertain which members of her family traveled with her on the journey westward.

There are three documented children of Ariana and Basil Beall:

  3. John, b. 26 Jul 1797; d. 17 Dec 1865 [5]

A possible fourth and fifth child are found in the 1833 Cincinnati Directory. William Brooke Beall, who settled in Ohio, is listed next to John Beall, hatter. Also listed is Edmund Beall, carpenter, possibly a sibling of John and William Brooke and a third son of Ariana. [8] Although not proven, Edmund Beall is currently linked as a son of Ariana Beall.
