Biography

1741 Birth & Parentage

Walter Beall, born ca 1741; son of Samuel Beall, Jr (of John of Alexander, immigrant) and Eleanor Brooke, daughter of Thomas Brooke III and Lucy Smith. [1]

He was presumably born in Frederick County, which was erected in 1748 out of the upper portion of Prince George's County (Montgomery and Washington Counties would not be erected until 1776.) [2] "Samuel and his family moved ever northward in Western Maryland, lived in Frederick County until it was subdivided into several counties." [Montgomery and Washington Counties] [3]

1778 Inheritance from Father

Will of SAMUEL BEALL, Jr., Washington County; written 15 Oct 1774; probate 10 Jan 1778.

To son Walter, part of Beall's Good Will. [1]

Two Marriages

  1. Walter Beall married first Feb 11, 1768, Susannah, born 1750, died 1785. Moved to Kentucky after 1778 and settled in Bordentown. [2]
  2. He married second Jan 6, 1787, Rebecca Tannehill, of Eastern Shore of Maryland, daughter of William and Sarah Tannehill. [2]

Patriotic & Judicial Service

Walter Beall had a distinguished career.

  • Dec 27, 1777: Member of Association of Freemen of Frederick County[2]
  • 1778: Took patriots's oath in Montgomery County [2]
  • 1778-79: Judge of County Court of Montgomery County [2]
  • Member of first Constitutional Convention of Kentucky. [2]

"Collins History of Kentucky mentions Walter Beall, b. 1740, of Nelson Co., Ky., as having served in the Revolutionary army, and was a Presidential Elector in 1792." [2]

Death

He died after 1792, Bordentown, Kentucky. [2]

He died by 20 Aug 1810, Kentucky. [1]

Children

Children according to Jourdan.

Children of first marriage:

  1. John Beall; in Franklin County, Kentucky in 1810 [1]
  2. Walter Beall; died before 1818; married Nancy Cox; daughter of Gabriel Cox [1]
  3. Susannah Beall, born before 1784; died after 1810; married Edward S. Thomas, born before 1765; died after 1810. [1]

Children of second marriage:

  1. Samuel T. Beall, born ca 1789; died 1840; married 1812 Sally Rector [1]

Note: F.M.M. Beall's data, which is less reliable, has some significant differences from Jourdan's list above. Under first marriage, he does not list John. His list includes Walter and Susannah, but also three other children: Phillip, born 1777; Cassandra, born 1779; Mary, born 1783. Under second marriage, he identifies Samuel Tannehill Beall, but also another child Sarah Beall, born Jan 16, 1788, who "burned to death." [2]
