Biography

Helen Marion Bean was born on March 3, 1899 in Gallatin County, Illinois.^[1] She was the daughter of Sherman Frank Bean and Cora May Jackson.^[1]

Helen married Raye L. Passage on June 18, 1921 in Los Angeles County, California.^[2]

How did Helen ever survive the tragedies that befell her family in the 1930's? First, she lost her little 3 year old daughter to leukemia in 1934, ^[3] then her mother died in May, 1936^[4] and her father followed soon after in August, 1936. ^[5] Just as Helen must have started to recover from her grief, her husband Ray died in May, 1937.^[6]

By 1940, Helen was working as a stenographer for the Edison Company, while she raised her daughter Joyce who has finished 8th grade.^[7]

Helen died on November 27, 1951 in Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles. ^[1] She is buried in San Gabriel Cemetery, San Gabriel (Los Angeles County), California.^[8][9]

Notes

Helen is listed as 9 years old in the 1900 census with a May birth date.^[10] Her death certificate, gravestone, and other censuses support the March 3, 1899 birthdate. Note also that Helen is named "Sarah" on the 1920 census.^[11]
