Biography

Asa Bean is a member of Clan MacBean.

Asa Bean, the son of Joshua and Mary (Bean) Bean, was born at Readfield, Maine, May 6, 1779. Asa graduated from Dartmouth College in 1805. He studied law in a law office in Montville, Maine, but did not go into the practice. Instead, Asa went into the mercantile business in Frankfort, Maine. He was supercargo of the vessel from Bangor, which carried him to his untimely end by the yellow fever. In 1811, Asa went to the West Indies on a business trip and died at sea at Havanna, Cuba, age 31, leaving a pregnant wife to have his only male child after his death. [1]

Asa married Betsey Atkinson, born in Boscawen, New Hampshire. Asa and Betsey had two children, born at Frankfort, Maine:

  • Susan H. Bean married Rev. Ames Littlefield on December 18, 1833
  • Alexander Hamilton Bean, born February 20, 1812 (after his father's death)

After Asa's death, Betsey married Timothy Copp of Montville, New Hampshire.

Researcher's Notes

George Thomas Chapman suggests in his biography of Asa, that his wife's first name was possibly Lucinda and that Betsey was a nickname.

Asa administered the estate of John Holdershaw in 1807. He's named in deeds on that profile with John's sons who were mariners.
