Biography

Robert Bean is a member of Clan MacBean.

On June 6, 1803, in Davidson County, Tennessee (near present day Nashville) Robert Bean, son of Captain Jesse Bean and Elizabeth (Mitchell) Bean married Sarah "Sallie" Miller, the sister of Colonel John Miller.

In 1814, Robert and Sallie lived in Batesville, Arkansas, when Independence County was established. They lived on the White River, and his claim was located in what was then called Poke Bayou. Robert was an early merchant, running a keel boat up and down the White River.

On October 23, 1820, Robert was elected by the new county government, the General Assembly of the Territory of Arkansas, to survey and lay out the land site for the new County Courthouse. Robert was the first Representative elected to the State House of Representatives.

It was Colonel Robert Bean who surveyed and laid out the road between Fort Smith, Arkansas and the Red River, over which so many traveled in the great Westward migration. In 1831, Robert and his son, William, and Judge Reuben Sanders made a trip to Taos, New Mexico and San Fernando.

A complete history of this Bean family is detailed in the Chronicles of Oklahoma, The Bean Family, by Carolyn Thomas Foreman. Robert's bio is on page 357 and a digital link is provided under references, below.
