Biography

Robert Bain, Sr. is the son of Daniel Bean and Margaret (Templeton) Bean. [1] (Robert Bain has no recorded connection to Daniel Bean or Margaret Templeton; Davis 42181)

In 1760, in Scotland, Robert married Martha McDonald. [2] In 1775, Robert and Martha immigrated to America via the port of New York, New York. [3] (There are no records showing when or where Robert Bain and Martha Mcdonald were married; Davis 42181)

Robert and Martha probably lived first in Virgnia, but definitely lived in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, and in Cabarrus County, North Carolina after its formation in 1792 (There are no records showing when Robert Immigrated to the Americas or where he lived prior to living in Mecklenburg County and then Cabarrus County, NC; Davis 42181)

The family of Robert Bain/Bean was listed in the 1790 Mecklenburg County Census and the 1800 Cabarrus County Census. The children of Robert and Martha are as follows: [4]

  • Daniel Bain, born 1762
  • John Bain, born 1765
  • Charles Bain, born 1768
  • Robert Bain, born 1771
  • Margaret Bain, born May 12, 1773
  • William Bain, born 1775
  • Alexander Bain, born 1777
  • Matthew Bain, born 1785
  • James Bain, born circa 1779
  • Nancy Bain, born 1784

ALL of the descendants of both Robert Bean, Sr. and his brother William Bean, Sr. changed the spelling of their surname to "B-A-I-N" in the very early 1800s. (There is no proof that Robert Bain changed the spelling of his surname, it is more likely that it was a variation or misspelled. Robert may have been illiterate and didn't know how to spell his name when he came to NC; Davis 42181)

Robert is the oldest of three McBane/McBean from the marriage of Jenat Harvie and Daniel McBane/McBean.[5] (This record shows a Robert Mcbean born in 1692, I'm not sure why it is attached; Davis 42181)

There’s a Robert McBean born April 1738 in Inverness

Scotland Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XB98-S9C : 10 February 2018), Robert Mcbean, 25 Apr 1738; citing INVERNESS,INVERNESS,SCOTLAND, reference , index based upon data collected by the Genealogical Society of Utah, Salt Lake City; FHL microfilm 990,666, 990,667

There are no real sources for Robert to be son of Daniel McBain & Margaret Templeton. There is a Family Source Tree which is not reliable and the baptism source listed is for Robert McBain, son of Daniel McBain and Janet Harvie, born in 1692.
Yes. I have been working on this in the background for quite a while. I had to pull away due to family obligations. I have records from Scotlandspeople that pretty much proves all you are saying here. I believe They are related and that’s why there is confusion among the Bain line in the U.S. I am now going to start correcting all the wrong entries and “fixes” people have been submitting. Thank you for your input. It’s nice to have others validate what I’ve been seeing. Keep your eyes open on upcoming changes and let me know if you see something strange.

Since the children are all listed as having been born in Mecklinburg County, North Carolina beginning in 1762, isn't it unlikely that this Robert Bain is the same one that is listed arriving in the port of New York in 1790?

I’m not sure who put the NY entry in here, but you are correct. This can not be our Robert. I am sure I have the correct Robert due to family records and DNA testing. I have many records that I will enter into the system from both the US and Scotland that will shed light on this, but I do not have his entry point into the US. I am still looking for records that match the timeframe of when our family claims he came in to the country.
