Thomas Webster Bean was born in South Hadley, Hampshire county, Massachusetts, the son of Jefferson Webster Bean and Agnes E. (Chalmers) Bean. [1] According to his birth records, his father was born in Holyoke, Hampden county, Massachusetts and his mother was born in New Jersey.
On the United States Census for 1910, then twenty-three year old Thomas W. Bean is living at home with his parents in South Hadley. He has younger siblings, Dorothea M. Bean, age 17; Sarah V. Bean, age 15, Rachel Bean, age 12, and Constance J. Bean, age 9. [2]
According to his Draft Registration for World War I, filed in Amhurst City, Mass, Thomas was single, of short stature and medium build, with brown hair and eyes. He was living in Montague, Massachusetts and was a Civil Engineer with the Turners Falls Power Company (established in 1885, the forerunner of Western Massachusetts Electric Company.) Thomas was supporting his mother at the time. His father had passed away in 1812. The image of the registration may be viewed on Family Search, and contains his written signature. [3]
Despite his mothers reliance on his son, Thomas was drafted anyway. We get his dates of service from the application to the War Department for a headstone or marker, to be erected at the Springdale Cemetery, in Turner Falls, Massachusetts. His enlistment period was from March 28, 1918 to June 20, 1919. He served as a Corporal, with Company C. of the 301st Engineers, 76th Massachusetts Division. He was honorably discharged. He died February 11, 1943. [4]
