Roscoe A. Bean was born November 23, 1849, in Belleville, Ohio, the son of John Bean and Emeline (Edgecomb) Bean. On October 6, 1871, in Belleville, Roscoe married Maggie Lavinia "Minnie" Aleman.
In 1880, Roscoe's father was advised by his doctor to move to California for health reasons. His father invented a device with which to spray orchards and demonstrated at the California Fair, in 1884. This became the beginning of the John Bean Spray Pump Company. In 1883 Roscoe moved to entered a partnership with his father and called the company the John Bean Manufacturing Company. Roscoe collaborated with H.G. Chamberlain in creating a branch in Hudson, Michigan, called the Bean-Chamberlain Manufacturing Company, which exhibited at the 1895 Michigan State Fair.
Roscoe's son, Leroy Bean continued the business in San Francisco. Roscoe died April 3, 1926, in Lenawee County, Michigan and is buried in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Hudson, Lenawee County, Michigan. [2]
