Biography

Eliza (Bean) Walton is a member of Clan Douglas.
Eliza (Bean) Walton is a member of Clan MacBean.

Eliza Small Bean was born in 1858, the daughter of Dudley Bean and Elvira Jane Douglass. She was petite and often commented that she fit her name of "small bean". Eliza married Greenleaf Melville Walton in Jay on 18 Sep 1877 and they lived on Science Hill in East Dixfield, Maine where they operated an apple farm. Greenleaf also made the barrels in which the apples were packed for sale, stamping them with a stencil that was used by his grandson Delbert Walton to stamp apple boxes he made, some of which were sold to the Hannaford Supermarket chain to display apples.

Eliza and Greenleaf had six children:

  • Mertice Lester b. 26 Mar 1878, d. Mar 1956;
  • Ella Blanche b. 18 Mar 1880, d. 11 Jun 1956;
  • Lula Edna b. 12 Mar 1882, d.1887;
  • Millard Greenleaf b. 7 Jul 1887, d. 30 Sep 1902;
  • Winifred Edith b. 12 Jan 1889, d. 5 May 1965;
  • Ralph Emerson b. 16 Jan 1893, d. 21 Jan 1933

Following the death of her husband in 1927, she lived with her daughter Ella and son-in-law Charles Smith in East Dixfield, Maine. Eliza died in 1930 and is buried at the East Dixfield Cemetery.

Disambiguation

Rose was born in 1859. She was the daughter of Dudley Bean and Elvira Douglas. Several family trees in Ancestry.com show her death date as 14 Jul 1940 in West Milan, New Hampshire when that Rose Bean is actually the daughter of a Caleb Bean from Bethel, Maine and not the daughter of Dudley and Elvira Bean. The "Rose" shown in the household of Dudley and Elvira Douglas Bean is actually their daughter Eliza.

Bean-5132 and Bean-5161 appear to represent the same person because: I believe Rose and Eliza are the same person. Rose is only mentioned in the 1870 census where Eliza is not, and their ages are the same. Rose is listed as Rose E.S., the middle initials being the same as Eliza would be. There is no mention of Rose in the family bible own by Dudley and Elvira Bean.
