Biography

Benjamin Bean lived in Appalachia, in Maryland.

Benjamin Bean, Jr. was born in 1802, in St. Mary's county, Maryland, the son of Benjamin Bean and Elizabeth (Cox) Bean and died April 8, 1847, in Hancock, Washington county, Maryland. [1] On November 12, 1837, in Washington county, Maryland, Benjamin married Minerva Ressley. [2]

Benjamin's father was born in St. Mary's county, in 1757 and migrated to Washington county, in 1803. There, he owned and operated a Tavern, which served as a guest-house, in Hancock, Maryland. The house, which later became the "Barton House" and stage-coach inn, now houses the Hancock Historical Society. Benjamin inherited his father's business, when his father died in 1821, but Minerva lost it soon after Benjamin, Jr.'s death in 1847: [3]

  • On November 27, 1848, at Washington county court, the court held that Henry Wells should have his execution against Minerva Bean wife of Benjamin Bean, deceased, and their children: Edward M., Mary, Ellen, Francis and Charles F. Bean. [4] Sheriff Daniel South was directed and commanded to sell the two-story weather boarded Tavern house of Benjamin Bean, deceased; also one two-story frame house, with lot annexed thereto, which the Sheriff died on June 9, 1849, for the sum of $75 to Henry Wells.
