Hulbert Bean was born in 1848. He is the son of Ellis Starr and Nancy Bean. [1] He married Elizabeth Hair, also Cherokee, about 1874. They were the parents of Malzerine and Elizabeth Bean. His wife Elizabeth died in 1877 and the 1880 Cherokee census shows Hulbert, his daughters, and his mother living together in the Illinois District. [2] He married Eliza Howell, a white woman in 1881. They were the parents of a daughter, Mary. [3] The 1920 census shows Hulbert living in McKey, Oklahoma. [4]
Hulbert was enrolled by the Dawes Commission in 1902 and applied for a share of the Eastern Cherokee (Guion Miller) payment in 1907, but was rejected because his parents were Old Settlers. [5] Hulbert died in 1924 and is buried at the Drakestand Cemetery, Sequoyah, Oklahoma. [6]
