John Beard was a US politician and a Yale graduate. He served in the Florida State Senate, was twice Comptroller of Public Accounts, and was a member of the Florida Secession Convention in 1861 and through the Civil War. In 1850, he ran unsuccessfully as the Democratic nominee to the US Congress.
Family
John Beard was the son of Lewis Beard and his wife Susannah Dunn. John married Anna M Kelly in the winter of 1820. They settled on a plantation near Salisbury. After her death in 1830 he married Maria W Anderson in the summer of 1838. In 1839, they moved to St Augustine. In 1847, after John was elected State Register of Public Lands, the family moved to Tallahassee. He had children from both marriages: two sons and three daughters by his first wife and two sons and a daughter by his second wife. He passed away at age 79. His wife Maria survived him.
