Biography

Charlotte was baptised 5th December 1793 at St Nicholas' Church, Brighton, Sussex. Her parents had married eleven months earlier at this same church.

John Unsted and Charlotte Beard, both of this parish and both aged about 20, married after banns on 19th June 1813 at St Nicholas' Church, Brighton, Sussex. She signed the marriage register with 'X'.

They went on to have nine children, the first baptised in Lambeth, London, Surrey, and all the rest in Brighton, Sussex: John 1816, Emma 1819, Frederick 1821, Sarah Ann 1823, Caroline 1825, Eliza ~1827, Martha ~1830, Nicholas, ~1833, and George 1837.

John's death was registered Jan-Mar 1838 at Brighton, Sussex (he was registered as 'Unstead'), leaving Charlotte a widow with a large young family. He was buried on the 16th January 1838 at St Nicholas' Church, 'Brighthelmstone' (Brighton), Sussex. His name was recorded as 'Ulstead' in the register and his abode as Pimlico - a very poor area of Brighton at that time.

In 1841 Charlotte, age ~45, was a washerwoman living at Woburn Place, St Peter's, Brighton, Sussex, with her five youngest children who were aged between 3 and 15.

In Oct-Dec 1849 Charlotte, age ~52, married William John Kent, age ~57, at Brighton, Sussex. He was a widower with eight children from his first marriage.

In 1851 William, age 61 carpenter journeyman, and Charlotte, age 55 washerwoman, were living at 49 Albion Street, Brighton, Sussex. Also with them was Charlotte's son George, age 13. Two other couples also lived at this address.

In 1861 William John (listed as John), age 72 carpenter, and Charlotte, age 66, were now living at 9 Newhaven Street, Brighton, Sussex, a couple of streets away from their previous address. Again there were two other families living at this address.

Charlotte's death was registered Jan-Mar 1867 at Brighton, Sussex, and she was buried, age ~72, at St Paul's Church, Addleston, Surrey (she had links to Surrey as evidenced by the baptism of her eldest son).

William John died three years later.
