Biography

Anne (Beard) Applegate was born in Semington, Wiltshire, England.

Ann, daughter of John Beard and Sarah Rumble, was baptised on 14 March 1784 in Semington, Wiltshire, England.^[1] Although that makes her 16 at the time of marriage, it's not impossible, and she may have been born slightly earlier. Also that makes her of just about a child bearing age to have had Matilda in 1830.

Having been widowed in 1823, Ann married Thomas Applegate on 4 May 1824 in Semington by license. Ann is noted as being of Semington, and Thomas Applegate of Trowbridge, also widowed.^[2]

In the 1841 census Ann Aplegate (age 55) was in Melksham, Wiltshire, England. She was living in the household of her nephew Edward Beard.^[3] Her daughter Matilda (age 10) was in Hungerford, Berkshire, England, in the household of Ann's brother John Beard.^[4]

In the 1851 census Ann (age 60) was with her daughter in Duchess of Somerset’s Hospital, in Froxfield, Wiltshire, England. The "Hospital" was a collection of cottages arranged in a square, built to house widows from the surrounding counties. Her date of birth is wildly out, but she was born in Semington and her daughter in Trowbridge.^[5]

Although her birth date is out, that's not uncommon. In the 1861 census Ann (age 73) born in Semington was with her daughter in Froxfield, Wiltshire, England. Notice her daughter was born in Trowbridge,^[6] as was the relative Matilda Applegate who was staying with George in 1871^[7] Also the 1861 census notes that she was a tailor's widow - Thomas was a tailor (see Matilda's baptism ^[8]).

Anne's death (age 81) was registered in the Apr-May-Jun quarter of 1865 in the Hungerford district. Date of birth 1784.^[9][10]

Research Notes

Matilda is George Bendy's half-sister, and Thomas Applegate was his step-father.
