Biography

Richard was born in 1838. He was the son of Havilah Beardsley and Rachel Calhoun. He passed away in 1876.[1]

Richard Beardsley (1838-1876) laid out the first Beardsley Addition (similar to a subdivision) in Elkhart, the first of many Beardsley real estate projects. Richard Beardsley appointed on 17 Dec 1861 acting assistant paymaster, US Navy resigned 27 June 1864. [2] The USS Owasco was a Unadilla-class gunboat built for the Union Navy during the American Civil War, commissioned 23 January 1862 during the Civil War and participated in the captures of New Orleans and Vicksburg. President Lincoln appointed him US Consul to Jerusalem, and he was promoted to Consul General for the US to Cairo. [3] Richard Beardsley died and was buried in Egypt in 1876. [Ruthmere.org][4]

Richard Beardsley appointed on 17 Dec 1861 acting assistant paymaster, US Navy resigned 27 June 1864 [5] as paymaster on the gunboat Owasco during the US Civil War and participated in the capture of New Orleans and the siege of Vicksburg, and for bravery was recommended for promotion by Commodore Porter, was appointed by President Lincoln United States Consul to Jerusalem and subsequently was promoted to consul general for the United States at Cairo, Egypt. Secretary Seward, in his book of travel around the world, says he found Mr. Beardsley one of the brightest diplomats in the service. He died on 23 Jan 1876 at Cairo, and by request of the people of that city was buried there and in evidence of their esteem they erected a fine monument to his memory. [History of Elkhart County][6]

Richard married on 9 October 1867, Isabella Smith, daughter of Rev. Philip Smith, A.M., of Moynalty, County Meath, Ireland. The marriage took place at Naples, Italy, at the British Consulate and the English Church. Children of Richard and Isabella Smith: [7]

RICHARD BEARDSLEY Born Oct. 9, 1838, at Elkhart, Ind.; Died Jan'y 30, 1876, at Cairo, Egypt. Entered Junior from Elkhart, Ind., BS 1859... Res. Grad. 1859 - 60. U.S. Consul General. Began the study of Law in 1860, which he relinquished at the outbreak of the Civil War; after the close of the War, he travelled in Europe and was appointed U.S. Consul at Jerusalem, where he served 1869 - 72, when he was appointed U.S. Consul General in Egypt, with residence at Cairo, where he served from 1872 until his death. Purser U.S. Navy, Dec. 17, 1861; served on the Gunboat Owasco under Com. Porter in the taking of New Orleans and was promoted to Paymaster, U.S. Navy, for gallant conduct in that action; resigned June 17, 1864, from failure of his health resulting in the loss of sight while engaged in the blockade of Charleston, S.C.; obtained partial recovery from blindness by a surgical operation while abroad. Foreign Correspondent of The New York World and a frequent contributor to American Periodicals on Oriental and Egyptian topics.
