Biography

William was born in 1816. He was the son of John Beardsley and Alice Booth. He passed away in 1900.[1]

From History of Cayuga County, New York, Pg. 322:

Beardsley, William C. Born at Stewart's Corners in the old town of Scipio, this county, March 27, 1816; educated in the common schools and academies at Aurora, Cayuga County, and Homer, Cortland County; read law with his brother Nelson Beardsley and Honorable William H. Seward. After his admission to the bar he was appointed a Master in Chancery the duties of which position he discharged for several years, but preferred an active business life to that of practising law. For many years he held the positions of cashier and president of the Auburn Exchange Bank, he was trustee of the Auburn Savings Bank from 1878 until his death; one of the original stockholders of the Cayuga County National Bank, and treasurer of the Merchants Union Express Company until its consolidation with the American; he was prominent in the reorganization of the Grand Trunk Railway of Canada; he was one of the first trustees of the Fort Hill Cemetery Association and filled such office until his death, serving a portion of such time as its president; postmaster 1841 to 1845; in 1852 he was a presidential elector. He died at his residence in the City of Auburn where he had lived for sixty years continuously, on January 25, 1900.

A lawyer by trade, and at one time engaged in the law office with his brother Nelson Beardsley, William C. Beardsley was also President of the Auburn Exchange Bank, one of the original stockholders of the Cayuga County National Bank, a director of the Grand Trunk Railroad, Auburn postmaster, a trustee of the Auburn Savings Bank, director of the Auburn Woolen Company and a trustee of the Fort Hill Cemetery for more than 25 years.
William C. Beardsley built the Italianate mansion 'Roselawn' at 91 South St. This house remained as the home of the Beardsley family until 1924.
William C. Beardsley was a member of the Fort Hill Cemetery Board of Trustees from 1873 to 1900 and served as Board President from 1897 to 1900. [Fort Hill Cemetery]
