Biography

Charles Beardsley was born about 1794 in either Connecticut or New York. He was the son of John and Jerusha (Beach) Beardsley. His father was born April 9, 1760 and was a soldier in the 6th Connecticut Regiment. [1]

#183. John Beardsley 6 ( Abraham 5 Abraham 4 John 3 Joseph 2 William 1) born at Stratford, Connecticut, 9 April 1760; died at Milton, New York, 1806; married, 24 Aug. 1779, Jerusha Beach, died 6 May 1831, age 62 years, [buried Wilcox Cemetery, Genoa, New York], daughter of Nehemiah Beach of Huntington, Connecticut. He was active in buying and selling land in Cayuga County, New York. His will was assigned by him at Stafford Springs, Ct.; Children: Nehemiah Beach, b. 20 June 1780, David, b. 1782, Everett, Charles, John, James, Nancy, Betsey, Eunice. [2]

In 1793 John Beardsley came from Stratford, Connecticut, “bringing with him his wife and five children. He settled near the Baptist church, on a part of lots 48 and 49, one-half of each. Was justice of the peace and county judge of Cayuga county. John Beardsley, his son, lives on a part of the old farm. He died in 1804, aged forty years.” [3]

The area the Beardsley family settled was known as Beardsley’s Corners. Originally a part of [Milton] Onondaga County, New York, it later was included in the Town of Genoa in Cayuga County. In 1817, the area was split off to create Lansing, Tompkins County, New York. Beardsley’s Corners, later known as North Lansing, is in the northeast corner of the town.

Charles Beardsley married Hannah Sholes/Shoules after 1810. [4] It is likely Hannah was the step-daughter of Jedediah Reynolds, who died in Milton, Cayuga County, in 1800.

Lucien, son of Charles and Hannah Beardsley’s reported he was born in Brighton, Monroe County, New York in 1817. However, Charles and Hannah were found in Lansing, New York in 1820 and 1830. They had two sons and two daughters before 1820 and had another son after that. [5] [6] The Common School records for North Lansing for 1827-1832 indicate Charles Beardsley had children between the ages of 5 and 15 eligible to attend school. [7]

According to the accounts of their son Lucien B. Beardsley, the family had migrated to Rives Township, Jackson County, Michigan by 1836. They were found there in 1840 with three sons and one daughter in their household. [8] At least one of their sons remained in Michigan, but Charles and Hannah returned to New York. They were in Allegany County, New York, where their daughter, Cordelia, married Joseph Hull in 1847. Charles couldn’t be located on the 1850 U. S. Census, but his wife Hannah was in the household of her son-in-law. [9] In 1860, Charles and Hannah were in Caneadea (Hallsport P. O.), Allegany County, New York. [10]

His first wife, Hannah, died in 1861. At an uncertain date prior to June 8, 1865, Charles married Arvilla (Townsend-1095) Carpenter and resided with her and her daughter, Helen Carpenter [11] The son of Charles Beardsley and Arvilla (Townsend-1095) Carpenter Beardsley, Charles Jasper Beardsley (Beardsley-144) was born on an uncertain date prior to Aug. 8, 1870 (i.e. Sep 1867) [12]

Charles Beardsley died testate on February 9, 1868. He is buried next to Hannah in Riverside Cemetery in Belfast, Allegany County, New York. [13]

Research Notes

  • Comments from Beardsley family researcher Nick Dann, 21 Dec 2016:
Is it possible that this Charles Beardsley is the same as Beardsley-3407 Charles Beardsley ? Common denominator seems to be Allegany County. See Research Notes in the Beardsley-3407 profile.
  • See Beardsley-3064 Charles Beardsley. Is it possible these are the same person?
  • 1860 US Census: Caneadea, Allegany County, NY, lists a Charles Beardsley, 64, b c1796 NY, and Hannah Beardsley (his wife?), 70, b c1790 NY. Could this be this Charles, Sr?
  • Find A Grave Memorial # 12645330 is for Charles Beardsley, b 1794, d 9 Feb 1868. Burial is at Riverside Cemetery, Belfast NY, Plot: Section C Lot 53. On the same stone (it appears) is wife Hannah (# 12645337), b 1790, d 19 Feb 1861. This, no doubt, is the Charles and Hannah of the 1860 Census. Again, is this Charles, Sr.
  • 1850 US Census: Belfast, Allegany County, NY, lists a Hannah Beardsley, 61, b c1789 NH. This is probably the same Hannah, as noted above. Here, she is living in the household of Joseph Hale, 29, and his wife, Cordelia, 30. Cordelia is probably Cordelia Beardsley. Hale could have been 'Hull'.

Beardsley-689 and Beardsley-3064 appear to represent the same person because: A large amount of evidence supports this merge. See, for example, images from the Beardsley-3064 Surrogate's Office file (1868, Allegany County, NY) .

The entry (Beardsley-142) is erroneous and should be edited. The source data from the "Allegany County and Its People, etc." publication is incorrect (not uncommon) regarding "His great-grandfather, Charles Beardsley, was a Massachusetts man, his grandfather, Judge Charles Beardsley, was of St. Lawrence county." No other data supports this. However, lots of data supports the fact that Charles Beardsley (Beardsley-3064) married Arvilla (Townsend) Carpenter and was the father of Charles Jasper Beardsley (Beardsley-3407). See New York State Census of 1865 and Allegany Surrogate's Office Records; Box 8; 1968; examples from [21-page] file on Charles Beardsley as posted under 'Source Images'.

Although I believe 3064 and 3407 are separate individuals, I have added Nick Dann's comments to the 3064 biography and updated existing source #2 (Beardsley Genealogy) with his version. Thank you, Nick.

The father and spouse are mentioned in the biography:

Charles Beardsley-3064: "son of John and Jerusha (Beach) Beardsley." His father a 6th Connecticut Regiment soldier settled in Cayuga County 1793 (uncertain if Charles was born in Conn or Cayuga County). Charles married Hannah Sholes. Moved to Michigan then to Allegany County late 1840s. Charles Beardsley-3407: his grandfather from Mass., his father Judge Charles Beardsley of St. Lawrence Co. NY, from whence Charles came in 1865 to Allegany County. Married Arilla (Townsend) Carpenter. They don't appear to be a match at this point.

Neither Charles Beardsley (a) or Charles Beardsley (b) have connected fathers Dee, and Charles Beardsley (a) is not connected to a spouse. Nick's question is if "Charles Beardsley Sr." is the same person as these two profiles.

It is possible I think, but there is one item that doesn't match. According to the information on Beardsley-3407 Charles Beardsley Sr. "was a Massachusetts man", but Beardsley-3064's information states he was either born in Connecticut or New York, and seemingly remained in New York during his lifetime.

I think this is a good "possible match", but more research is needed to pull the trigger and make a merge.

I do not see any facts to suggest Beardsley-3407 and Beardsley-3064 are the same men. In fact, they have different fathers and spouses. Would you please explain why you feel they are one in the same.
