His book “Reminiscences”, is most interesting. In this he calls the battle of bennington, a considerable portion of the contact took place on this grandfather’s farm and in sight of his house, which being made of logs, was intended to be filled with men, as a strong point of defense. Those who commenced building this breastwork, were finally called away to Man the work on the hill, and thus the house was left to the family. His grandfather, Obadiah, then about fifty years of age, was a non-combatant; he always regarded the life of a soldier with disrealish, as full of hardships and danger and during the French War, declined entering military service. He was an Episcopalian in sentiment, and like many members of this denomination, was reluctant to bear arms against the king, though he cheerfully paid his taxes to promote the common cause. He used to remark that it was as necessary to have some at home to raise the bread and meat for the armies as to engage in active service and warfare. Apparently he was under the influence of his brother John, who was educated for the ministry.
