Biography

I was born and raised in Hurtsboro, AL. and delivered newspapers on a bicycle/motorcycle during my high school years for spending money. As the middle child of 5 kids, my parents could not afford to send me to college, so I did not take any advance courses in high school and all I wanted to do was graduate high school and get a job. This was not as easy as I had thought, so I joined the Alabama Air National Guard which taught me a lot and prepared me for the ups and downs that life would offer. After my 6 months of active duty, I got a job with the Alabama Highway Department working as a field survey/inspector on I-85 near Auburn, AL and attended monthly drills for 6 years at Dannelly Field in Montgomery, AL. Once the Department realized I could type they moved me into the office to do quantities and cost estimates and reports. After working for 2 years for the Highway Department, it was stressed to me how far I could go with an education beyond high school. So, I left with the understanding that I could work during the summers and possibly part time as my class schedule would allow. I enrolled at Auburn University in January 1966 and having been out of high school for nearly four years did not make this an easy task. However, I passed, and every quarter made a better grade than the quarter before so by the time I was a Junior I was making the AB honor roll and the A honor roll my Senior year. I graduated with a Civil Engineering degree in the Winter Quarter of 1970. I was voted the Outstanding Civil Engineering Graduate and was a member of Chi Epsilon. Prior to graduation, I received 15 of 15 job offers and took a Design Engineering job with David Volkert & Associates, Inc. (now known as Volkert, Inc.) in Mobile Alabama. The firm had about 60 people at that time. It didn’t hurt that the fella interviewing me was also an Auburn Engineer. Little did I know that this person, would be my boss for my entire career, as he moved up so did I. Over my career I was a registered professional Engineer in 13 states and worked my way up the corporate ladder to Senior Vice President & C. O. O. in charge of multiple regions and hundreds of personnel. when I retired in 2010 after 40+ years of work with Volkert we had over 750+ employees and offices all over the southeast. I was fortunate to have worked on 7 different Alabama Hall of Fame Projects of which three I was Principal-in-charge of design from begin to the end. My work career spans the slide rule era, main frame computer and PC computer era and CADD era even though I never was able to get proficiency in CADD. Shortly after I started working in Mobile, I married a young girl from Opelika whom I had met at Auburn, and we have now been married for over 50 years. Wilma and I have 2 children, both of whom graduated from Auburn. My Son also married a lovely Auburn graduate, and they have 2 children of which one is in Pharmacy School at Auburn now and the other is a Senior in high school and hopes to join the Engineering program at Auburn in 2022. As of 2021, my hobbies include photography, making videos, woodworking and restoring my 1970 VW Convertible that I bought new when I graduated from Auburn after moving to Mobile. I have restored it twice in the 50+ years that I have owned it. God Bless America, and Auburn! War Eagle! Malcolm N. Beasley Sr.
