Biography

David, 1st Laird of Creich, Comptroller of Scotland, was the son of John Beaton, 5th Lord Balfour and Boswell-606|Margaret Boswell.[1]

He was Comptroller of Scotland [2][3]

He married Janet Duddingston, daughter of Stephen Duddingston, 1st Laird of Sandfurd, from whom many of the chief nobility and gentry of Scotland are descended, was married first to Sir Thomas Livingstone of Easter Wemyss, and after his death she became the third wife of James the first Earl of Arran of the Hamiltons, and nephew of King James III. [4]. They had issue:

  1. Sir John Beaton, 2nd Laird of Creich [5]
  2. Janet Beaton b. c 1486, d. c 1522

In the reign of James IV (of Scotland, 1488 - 1513), the estate of Creich, in the parish of that name in Fife, was acquired by Sir David Bethune, second son of Sir John Beaton and Marjory Boswell.[6]Sir David was brought up in his youth with King James IV., who held him in great favour. He was first appointed Comptroller of the Exchequer, and subsequently Lord High Treasurer of Scotland,[7] which office he held until his death.

At Ballinbreich on 26 Jun 1504 , David Beaton of Creich the Treasurer purchased the lands of Dalbog and Contrahills in the Barony of Ballinbreich. [8]

David was always recorded as Beaton/Betoun not Bethune. I have added proper references to show him recorded as such in the Exchequer papers of Scotland and also in Royal Charters which show his father was also recorded as Beaton. It is best to use contemporary sources rather than imported from other socalled "genealogies"

As he only acquired the estate of Creich in 1502, when he was aged about 40, is it likely that he was born there?

Don't think he was ever "Lord Creich", if that title has existed, but he certainly was laird of Creich.
