John Beattie was appointed teacher at Ournie, NSW on 9-01-1880; Bunaloo 10-05-1881; Yerong Creek 21-10-1881; Brown Mountain 1-07-1885, Upper Tarcutta 12-01-1888; Tocumwal 12-01-1892; Tuggerah 17-09-1895; Pyree 30-05-1901.

In 1880 Mary Cameron (Gilmore) joined John at the school where, for eighteen months, he prepared her to take the pupil-teacher examination of New South Wales. Mary described her uncle John as a "good, kind uncle".

He died at his home "Rol-Arno," Kogarah, on 5 December, 1926,[2] and was buried in the Presbyterian portion of Woronora Memorial Park.[3]

Obituary

PANEGYRIC. THE LATE JOHN BEATTIE[4]

There passed away at his residence "Rol-Arno," West Kogarah, on the 5th December, a gentleman who during his long period as public school teacher in Pyree, won the affection of all his pupils who had the honour, pleasure and privilege of receiving their education under his tuition, and he gained the respect of all the parents and residents of where he laboured for such a number of years. The late Mr. Beattie took a deep interest in his school, and in many ways assisted the pupils to establish themselves to be good citizens. He (himself) with his good wife were live members of the community during their long stay in Pyree ; held many entertainment in connection with the school that gave pleasure to the children and filled their parents with pride. He was secretary of the Literary institute for a number of years, and was an ardent worker in holding things that were educational for the young. He was a debater and was solid in his views. The Pyree cricket club , had in him an able secretary, and an enthusiast in the game; His club mates held him in high esteem on the field and off it, and his presence was a factor for good with all he associated with. When he changed schools with Mr. Bush at Cowra, he was given a "most fitting farewell," and the Pyree Literary Institute could not accommo-date the large assemblage that gathered to say "good- bye" to a grand man wife, and family. During his teaching career at Cowra the great war broke out and was the means of bringing sorrow to his home that weighed him down ever afterwards. He lost two fine sons, Ronald and Arnold during the war and to perpetuate their memory, named his home at Kogarah, "Rol-Arno," after the two heroes. He visited the district during last Nowra show, and it was easily seen then he was far from being a robust man, but the warm welcome he received from all who had the pleasure of meeting him as old friends must have been a reward any man might feel proud of. The late Mr. Beattie will be on the lips of many for years to come as a good citizen, an exemplary living man, a devoted husband, and loving father. His wife and family have the sympathy of a large circle of Pyree friends, and of many others in the Shoalhaven district.

Unselfishly he, his knowledge gave,
Whilst round him scholars grew,
Willing to be the students' slave,
While they rose in honour true.
Pyree, 14/12/'20. A

N.B. The reference to "Ronald" in the above article is actually for John Rolston.

John Beattie was married to Frances Jane Heydon, not Elizabeth Hennessy.
