"Preston County was in Virginia until 20 June 1863, when it was one of 50 Virginia counties that were admitted to the Union as the State of West Virginia."[2]
James' father had purchased land in Preston County in 1798 "but because of fear of the Indian hostilities, his wife was unwilling to join him. He therefore recrossed the mountains and stayed at Bear Creek Furnace till 1800, when he returned with his wife and family..." [3]
His father Robert Beatty married first to Mary "Polly" Hoke [4]about 1777 or 1778 and he married second to Sarah Ross.[4] Because Mary Polly's death date and Sarah's marriage date are unknown, the mother of each of Robert's children is uncertain.

1878 DEATH AND BURIAL
James Beaty died 7 Aug 1878 in Washington County, Iowa; burial in Grace Hill Cemetery, Washington County, Iowa.[1]
Name is Beaty on his tombstone, Beatty in his obituary.
Gravestone Inscription:
"James Beaty, Died 08/07/1878, in the 76th year of his age" [1]
There is an interesting note on Find A Grave posted by Silverfox in 2010:
Note that husbands and wives are buried in a Moravian cemetery as if in pews in a church. All the stones are in rows all facing the same direction, with all the women on one side and all the men on the other side. There are newer stones in back of the older stones that are arranged in the "normal" mode we usually see today of family plots.[1]
James Beatty Obituary
DIED - Another old landmark has been removed from Dutch Creek, in the person of Mr. James Beatty (sic), who died Wednesday evening and buried in the Moravian cemetery, Thursday at 4pm. Father Beatty was born in Preston Co, WV in 1802, came to Iowa and settled in D. C. (Dutch Creek) in 1856, and has resided there most of the time since, except 3 years he spent in Lafayette Twp, Keokuk Co. He raised a family of 9 children, 3 boys and 6 girls, 8 of whom are still living. He has been a member of the M. E. church (Methodist Episcopalean) for many years, was kind and good to his family and neighbors, just one of that rare class of men who appear to try to do all the good possible. He had no enemies. He was sensible to the last and expressed his readiness "to step on the boat at any time." His disease was hemorrage of the lungs. Dr. Wallace treated him, and the friends wish us to thank him for his untiring zeal professionally. Rev Herbst preached the funeral sermon.[12]

Re: Father's bio from "History of Preston County West Virginia Part I"
Robert Beatty was a soldier under General McIntosh in the Revolution. In 1798 he arrived from Hampshire, and purchased 400 acres on the river-hill plateau northeast of Kingwood, paying for it with two ponies. This tract, which includes the Dille farm, is of much more than ordinary quality. The pioneer built a cabin and began improvements, but because of a fear of the Indians the wife did not join him till two years later. When he brought her to the new home he was accompanied by Colonel Moore, who planted some apple sprouts on Page 322 the Beatty farm. In 1856, Robert sold the farm and removed to Ohio, were he died at the age of eighty-seven. John was the only son to remain in Preston. Of his own sons, Thomas and James settled on Salt Lick, and Alpheus, Henry C., and George R., in the Whetsell neighborhood. Henry C., is the last surviving member of the county court as constituted under the old system. - page 321-322 [3]
