Biography

George was a Freemason

George was born 27 December 1888 in Paw Creek, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. He was the son of Amos Beaty and Euphenia Kelly.

The 1900[1] and 1910[2] censuses show George living with his parents and various siblings in Paw Creek, Mecklenburg County.

George was a veteran of the United States Army during World War I, serving in Company F, 306th Engineers, 81st Division. He was inducted in Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, on 28 May 1918.[3] George departed New York on 30 July 1918.[4] He served overseas from 31 July 1918 to 15 June 1919, and was discharged on 20 June 1919. He departed from St Nazaire, France, aboard the Santa Malta on 3 June 1919.[5]

George disappears for a bit after his discharge from the Army. He does not show in the 1920 census. Sometime before 1922, George migrated to Alabama. It was there, in Bibb County, that he married Linnie Evelyn Hughes on 10 February 1925.[6]

in 1930, George and Linnie were living with Linnie's father, C. Thomas Hughes. George was 41 years old and working as a foreman in railway construction.[7]

George and Linnie were renting a home in Jackson, Clarke County, in 1940. He was 51 and was still a foreman for the railway. A sister-in-law, Louise Wilmer (age 42), and Louise's daughter, Mary Louise Wilmer (or Germer, age 9), were living with George and Linnie.[8] Shortly after this census, George retired a received a railroad pension until his death.[9]

In neither census record or in George's obituary is there an indication that George and Linnie had any children.

George died at his home in Mobile, Alabama, on 7 December 1948 and was buried on 8 December 1948 at Pine Crest Cemetery in Jackson, Clarke County, Alabama. He was a member of the Santa Fe Lodge, No. 226, A. F. & A. M., the John Oliver, Jr., Post of the American Legion, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.[10] [11] George's wife, Linnie, applied for a military gravestone on 23 February 1948 which was approved and placed on his grave.[12]
