Biography

Francis was born about 1715. Francis Beaty ... He passed away about 1774. Francis Beaty was born in North Carolina in 1711 to parents unknown at this time. The family moved to Maryland Colony when he was about 10, He married Martha Mitchell in Lancaster County, Province of Pennsylvania in 1730. They had nine children in 24 years in various locations (see second comment). He received a land grant of 600 acres on 19 Apr 1763.[1] Another land grant was issued in Dec 1763 for 400 acres[2] and on 21 Dec 1763 for 250 acres.[3]He died in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina in 1774.

1715 Birth Estimate

1759 Tax census shows Francis Beaty in Rowan Co. NC.

16 Jan 1760 Francis Beaty witness to deed of Joshua Barton & wife Jean to John Fuller Lane in Rowan County NC.

1762 Mecklenburg cut from Anson, so it borders Rowan on the south.

1774 Death: In his will, Francis names the following children in this order: son Thomas, son James, son Hugh, son John, son Francis, son Robert, son Wallace, son-in-law Robert Gray, and son-in-law Robert Armstrong and Agness, his wife. see below

Research Notes

  • According to FamilySearch, he was a soldier in the Revolutionary War; however, if he passed away in 1774, he was dead before the war commenced.
  • I believe the list of children may be erroneous. John b. 1730 in Orange County, Colony of Virginia; Thomas b. 1735 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania; Elizabeth b. 1740 and James b. 1741 in Augusta County, Colony of Virginia; Hugh b. 1744 in North Carolina; Wallace b. 1747 in Augusta County, Colony of Virginia; Francis John b. 1747 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina; and Agnes b. 1754 in Augusta County, Colony of Virginia. This would account for eight moves in 24 years which is not impossible but seems doubtful. Is it possible that there are children from two different families that have been combined here?
  • If you have additional information or source documents that refute the information in the biography or the list of children, please feel free to make changes. Be sure to cite your sources.

Beatty DNA

In Les Beaty's post "Francis Beaty and Related Lineages" on the beattydna.org website, he reports that James Beaty who died in Cumberland Co., PA in 1777 was closely related to Francis Beaty, who died in Mecklenburg Co., NC in 1773 - "James Beaty... was at least a close cousin (1st cousin?) or a brother of Francis Beaty". He also states that John Beaty, the NC pioneer settler on the Catawba River, was NOT related to Francis Beaty in the near term. Going farther back, he shows that Francis Beaty's descendants match y-DNA with the Beaty families of southern Scotland.
