While Jane no longer has her Magna Carta connections, she does still have royal connections through her father (see details, below).

Biography

Jane (or Joan) Beaufort is the natural daughter of Harry Beaufort (later Bishop of Lincoln, Lord Chancellor of England, Cardinal Bishop of Winchester, Cardinal of England and Privy Councillor), was born about 1390.[1]

The mistress of Henry Beaufort is often said to be Alice FitzAlan (or Arundel) and she was previously thought to be Joan's mother.[1][2] This has been shown to be incorrect.[3][4] The name of her mother is unknown.

Joan married Edward Stradling, Knt., son and heir of William Stradling, Knt., by Isabel, daughter and heiress of John Saint Barbe.[1] They had three sons and one daughter:

  • Henry (or Harry) Knt., born 1412-1422, died in Cyprus 1476, married Elizabeth ferch William ap Thomas and had issue[1]
  • John [Archdeacon of Llandaff][1]
  • David[1]
  • Joan (or Katherine), married Maurice Denys (or Dennis)[1]

Edward Stradling's, wife, Joan was a legatee in the 1447 will of her father, Cardinal Henry Beaufort, who bequeathed her "two dozen dishes, four chargers, salt cellars, etc., & c li. in gold." [1]

Sir Edward Stradling died at Jerusalem shortly before 27 June 1452. His widow, Joan, died 19 October 1479.[1]

Research Notes

Douglas Richardson documents Jane Beaufort as a descendant of Magna Carta Surety Barons through Alice FitzAlan, but she has been disconnected as Joan's mother. While Joan is still a valid ancestor for several Gateway Ancestors, she no longer has a valid Magna Carta trail (her father Henry is documented by Richardson to royalty, not to surety barons).

Jane (Beaufort) Stradling appears in Magna Carta Ancestry in a Richardson-documented trail from Gateway Ancestor Barbara (Aubrey) Bevan to Magna Carta Surety Baron Robert de Vere (vol. I, pages 73-75 AUBREY). However, this trail goes through Beaufort-6 who in 2019 was disproved as being the daughter of Alice (FitzAlan) de Arundel, thereby breaking this trail. See 2019 soc.genealogy.medieval post for more information.

Jane (Beaufort) Stradling appears in Magna Carta Ancestry in a Richardson-documented trail from Gateway Ancestors George Popham, William Pole (or Poole) and Elizabeth Pole (or Poole) to Magna Carta Surety Baron Robert de Vere (vol. IV, pages 114-122 STRADLING) that was badged by the Magna Carta Project in May 2015. This trail is also broken at Joan Beaufort.

I have removed the Magna Carta Project as a profile manager as she is not in a recognised Magna Carta Trail.

It's a little stronger than uncertain. Brad Verity showed in his 2004 article in Foundations that Joan's mother could not have been Alice Fitz Alan. She should be detached.

If her mother's identity is uncertain, then she's not a descendant of Lacy-284... perhaps that's why the profile didn't include it before.
