Prince Eugene Maximilianovich Romanovsky, 5th Duke of Leuchtenberg, was born on 8 February 1847 (27 January 1847 according to the Julian calendar then in use in Russia) in St Petersburg, as the fifth child and second son of Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaevna of Russia and Duke Maximilian of Leuchtenberg[1]. He was granted the title of Imperial Highness and Prince Romanovsky by decree of Emperor Nicholas I in December 1852.
He was enlisted in the Preobrazhensky Life Guards and the Life Guards of the Ulansky Regiments from birth. In 1872-1873, he participated in the attack on Khiva and was awarded the Order of St. George. He was promoted to colonel, commander of the Alexandria 5th Hussars in 1874. He became a Lieutenant general in 1886, and was commander of the 37th Infantry Division from 1888 until 1893[1][2].
He married, firstly (morganatically), Daria Konstantinovna Opochinina on January 9, 1869 in Florence. Daria Konstantinovna died giving birth to the couple's only child, Daria (born 19 March 1870)[1].
He married, secondly, Zinaida Dmitrievna Skobeleva, a cousin of his first wife, in 1878 in Peterhof. There were no children of this marriage[1]. Zinaida had an open long-term affair with Grand Duke Alexei Alexandrovich of Russia[2].
Prince Eugene died on 31 August 1901 (18 August 1901, old style) in St Petersburg. He was buried in the Isidorov Church of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra[1].
