Biography

Catherine Brillant Beaulieu was born 28 April 1753, the daughter of Jean-Baptiste Brillant dit Beaulieu and Françoise Itagisse-Chrétienne. She was baptised on Mackinac Island on 15 Jul 1753.

On 9 July 1770, Catherine married Antoine Mesny. She was 17 years old and Antoine was 19. They were the parents to at least two children, Catherine in 1772 and Cecile on 3 May 1776.

Catherine Brillant Beaulieu passed away in 1796 at the age of 43. [1]

Research Notes

  • A Catherine Mene, half blooded Chippewa known to her tribe as Kitchegeequa, claimed title to the Flint River Indian Reservation number 11 per the treaty of 1819. Catherine is said to have died a few years after the treaty and Charles Mene and her other heirs were conveyed the title. It would be a strong coincidence for another half Chippewa named Catherine to have married a Mene/Meny. Her sister, Angélique also laid claim to one of the reservation lands so it is possible that Catherine Beaulieu Meny and Catherine Mene are the same person. Could this be her daughter, Catherine Meny, who married Joseph Chauvin? This Catherine would not have been half Chippewa, only a quarter. [2]
