François est parti combattre pendant la guerre civile et n'est jamais revenu. Il est répertorié comme soldat dans la compagnie « A », 7e régiment d'infanterie du Wisconsin. Capturé lors de la "Battle of the Wilderness", le 5 mai 1864, il est emprisonné à la Prison d'Andersonville, Georgie.
