Biography

Bergljot was born 17 Apr 1873 in Trondheim, Sør-Trøndelag. She was the daughter of Thomas Knoff Bech, a steam engineer, and Bergljot Bassøe. Bergljot was baptized 7 June 1873 at Trondheim.[1][2]

At the time of the 1885 Norway Census, the Bech family was livingat 235 Kirkegaden 4 in Kristiania. The family included the parents, Thomas Bech, born 1837 in Bindalen and working as a skibsfører, and Bergliot, born 1842 in Trondheim, along with their children: Alette, born 1867 in Trondheim; Carl Christian Bassøe Bech, born 1870 in Trondheim; and Bergliot, born 1872 in Trondheim. The family also had a servant, Kristian Pedersen, born 1837 in Ullensaker.[3]

Bergljot was first married to Edvard Goepfert, a factory owner. They were the parents of one child, a daughter, named Maria Bergljot, born 29 July 1894. Bergljot and Edvard lived in Vienna. They divorced 13 November 1897.[4]

On 16 May 1898, in Oslo, Bergljot was married to the writer Knut Hamsun.[5] They were the parents of one child, a daughter named Victoria, born 15 August 1902. They were divorced in 1908.

Bergljot died in 17 April 1943 in France.
