Basile Béchard, was born in 1786 in Ste-Marguerite-de-Blairfindie, L'Acadie, St-Jean, Québec, and was one of the early settlers of Dover township, Ontario. He was the son of Theodore Bechard and Marguerite Remillard.
After reaching manhood Basile chose farming for his occupation and followed that calling for the most part during his active career.
He married Josephine (Josephte / Josette) Giroux, in 1809 in Ste-Marguerite-de-Blairfinidie, L'Acadie and of this union were born four sons and six daughters.
In 1834, with his wife and 10 children, he came to the Windsor/Detroit region, and, as there were no facilities for travel at that time, the journey was made part way by carts and part by water. In 1838 Mr. Béchard and his family settled in Dover township, Kent County, upon a 200 acre tract of wild land in Pain Court, which was then a howling wilderness, not a tree having been cut upon the place. There he engaged in agricultural pursuits for the rest of his life. Upon his death his land was divided among his four sons.
He died in 1853, and was buried in Pain Court.
